Dandelions

“Yellow, Yellow, Everywhere! See it here, see it there.” The lyrics of a happy Children's song cannot be more suitable to describe what we see these days. It is the season of the dandelion, one of the most recognizable plants, one of the most hated weeds and one of the most loved herbs, depending on people's attitude toward it.

Dandelion is said to get its name from the French word “dent-de-lion”, meaning "the lion's tooth", as its jagged edges of leaves resemble the teeth of lions. Just like the traits of lions, dandelions symbolize perseverance and strength. There is even a term called “dandelion children” to refer to the children who are psychologically resilient.  At some point, a lot of us want to be as hardy as dandelions to survive and thrive in whatever circumstances we may encounter.

Dandelions grow almost everywhere, in the lawns, gardens, pathways, and even from cracks in the concrete. They are most recognized for their bright yellow flowers and seeds carried away by the wind flying like tiny parachutes. Children love them. It is such a pleasure to see the smiles on the children's faces and hear their giggles when they pick the flowers or blow the seedy puffy-balls.

Children don't treat dandelions as weeds, neither do I. I have found that dandelions are good for my lawn. Over the years of having to dig up dandelions every spring, I noticed that their roots really help loosen hard-packed soil and aerate the lawn. I actually enjoy digging up dandelions in my garden, knowing I am also harvesting a crop of nutritious herb.

Dandelions are a special treat to us. The leaves taste like spinach, with slight bitterness. They can be served as a boiled dish with Chinese seasonings, or in wonton soup or as part of the dumpling ingredients. Water from boiled leaves can be used to treat sore throat or inflammation. For over a thousand years, dandelion has been a traditional medicinal herb in China, which can be found in almost every drug store, in the forms of loose dried leaves, flowers, roots or powdered. It is commonly used to treat various types of inflammation, red or swollen eyes, urinary tract infections and even jaundice.

“Yellow, Yellow, Everywhere!

See it here, see it there. ......

Yes, yellow is a pretty sight,

Makes the world so gay and bright!”

Beautiful writing! Thank you for sharing it!

I wish I had some dandelions in my yard. :) I don't. I dug up all the grass a few years ago and planted drough-resistent plants in my yard instead, since water is precious here.

Thank you Sweetie! You made a wise decision to replace

grass with drought-resistant plants.  We have a rain barrel which helps save a lot of water.

Rain barrels definitely help save water.

But we don't get a single drop of rain in more than 6 months of the year, from April to late October. Some years, even during the raining season, which usually starts in November and ends in March or Early April, we didn't get much rain.  That's why you'll see more succulent garderns than green lawns in this area. :)

Ironically, we have some well-known golf courses in this area. How much water is used to maintain those golf courses!

Have a great day!
