个人觉得,选学校就是选价值观。。 成功的路很多,看哪里更适合孩子发挥自己特长吧。。
大学也有很多的统计资料,就是卷高中出来的在大学不也都是出类拔萃的,就是花时间卷卷卷。
普通娃还是算了,被拉沟里的风险太大

不是说不去好学校,就一定得去差学校,不去10分的,可以去8分的。
我们这个最卷的高中,已经有快10年是7分学校了,因为有大量隔壁差区的过来上。就这样,依然是我们这区,上名校的人数最多的高中,最卷的高中。学习成绩还是家庭条件都是在两个极端的学生很多。

我当年高三的时候, 最后几个月。 班主任调位子, 学习中等的学生 都坐前三排, 学习好的, 差的 坐后面。
认识个在7分高中的 top 10 的男生(不是top 10%), 很容易进了旗舰州大STEM, 一开始很自信结果差一点点drop out 了,对他来说真是难死了。 好多差校鸡头都drop out了。
另外认识的一个也是6分白人高中的中国孩子,top 4%. 家里穷宁愿混非旗舰的家门口普通州大STEM。 结果大学有时候考试还不及格。
真的要看娃,对普娃来说,卷的高中里,学习扎实得多得多,被迫 stretch limit 激发潜能. 一次次走出舒适圈。混在普通高中家长再不太管的话,就真的自我放羊了。 如果娃本来就自律,家长也抓的紧,在校外积极搞学习,就没事。
现实是大部分娃都不自律,很不喜欢家长推。 学校推呢,算了忍忍跟着走。
Teenager 叛逆期受 peer 的影响非常大,除非孩子天生是非常坚韧的性格,否则周围同学大多数都是lay back那种,全靠家长拖拽着当鸡头,那真的是天天鸡飞狗跳,想想都累。
人生就是这样,我们当年市重点每年进清华一两个学生,我家认识的几个去了清华以后也都一开始被碾压很抑郁,但是后来也都适应了最后也许不是最突出的了但发展的都很好达到了他们中学同学完全达不到的程度。

top school 在穷区普高招学生,要招的也是第一代,而不是父母受过良好教育富裕的中产家庭孩子
有没有上大藤, 本就不是评判一个人是否聪明努力的标准,之后的人生,一个人如果真是聪明努力的话,迟早会显示出来的。
不过加拿大情况跟美国不太一样,我们很多公立学校是非常好的,学生上好大学的升学率比私校好 (当然如果在加拿大上的话各个大学也都差不多),但大家还是更重视一些其它的东西,不是唯成绩论。

你说的这种学校压根就不会在华人的考虑范围之内,我们说的当鸡头凤尾的学校,是指10分的公校和8分公校的差别。10分的公校可能80%亚裔和印度,7分公校也在好的中产区但是相对于10分学校确实竞争低了很多。其实10分和8分的学校学生整体平均水平和素质没有太大的区别,最大的区别是那top 10%的学生卷的程度。有的小孩在10分公校卷不进10%,但是去了8分能卷到5%, 这个ranking difference对于申请州大并没有太大的区别,但是对于申请藤校可能就会make a difference.
top schools 一定会去6,7分的学校招生,top schools 才最讲政治正确,哪个学校敢不去穷的zipcode 招人?等着被人家揪出来批斗他们歧视穷人吗?别说大学了,顶级私高每年都会从穷的zipcode 招一两个给financial aide, 面子总是要做足的。美国学校好坏和当地居民的经济条件完全成正比。

难道我们自己不是这样过来的?在本地一流高中,周围也都是很优秀的人,学习上肯定是有竞争也有互助的时候,回顾经历肯定是利大于弊,周围优秀的人会促使自己更加努力进步。
在卷的高中burn out的也很多啊,很多美国大学没那么难,如果不盯着州大,私立很轻松的,一般不会fail学生,耶鲁已经至少80%的学生拿A或者A-了。
为什么说是严重的呢,这是一个很普通的日常用词啊。如果你也是在国内上的初中高中大学的话,无论文科理科,政治课或者品德或者其他名称的课上是不是都讲一点儿三观的内容?三观里我觉得价值观是最切实际生活的,因为说到底 一生就是一个不断选择的过程,在孩子未成年之前,咱们家长替孩子或者引导孩子做选择,最终使他们具有独立选择判断的能力。

我好朋友的儿子从lynbrook 转到westmont,小男生,马上从top 20%变成top 1%,不过他们康嫂说也就是有把握UCSD这类学校,ucb, ucla没把握的。 不过这都是价值观问题,有家长觉得要进好大学为终极目标。有家长觉得高中学的多点,有多点好学生给孩子一点压力比较好。
的确如此,就像中国分省招生,高考大省高一就学完高中课程,后两年全在复习,高考分数比一般省份高四五十分,可是进了大学,没有几边几遍的学习,比普通省份出来的学生还差

我自己没这种经验。反正只是看学习成绩,别人也不可能在我学习成绩上能有影响。 这里是各种club,体育活动,尤其是人多的学校,什么活动都是竞争。比如参加science olympiad,你想做哪个项目都不是自己能随便选。
除了少量自推牛娃,大部分孩子和大人一样都是有惰性的吧?推吧又怕揠苗助长,不推吧让他/她舒适又怕放羊了。
普通高中1% 和好GPA 都进不了ucb,ucla? (在EC 都不错的情况下)。不是说好大学主要就看ranking, GPA 吗? 所以当鸡头也没用?
没有反证啊,就是说老美大学录取最重要的是同高中gpa的百分比,7分高中可以轻轻松松排进前10%,顶级私校再努力,大部分人还是进不了前10%,好的大学也不会多看你一眼
这个高中是白人学区,可能光看学习好也是不够的,体育艺术竞赛领导力什么应该都要看吧,如果招生官是白人肯定还得选白人。

我们是这么过来的,但是我们不是校内竞争啊!我们那时候一个班都有几个考上清华北大的。可是美国这里不是跟国内不一样,就是校内竞争?我不是专家,肤浅理解。
如果孩子很一般的话,怎么可能进top private boarding school?不过同意你的观点,一般的小孩在顶似的确会更容易进好大学。这种一般的小孩往往都是幼儿园就进去占位置的孩子,要是初高中考是考不进的

纯想象。我们这里好的私高里的孩子吸很利害的毒,隔几年就会死/废一个,都是因为家里有钱惹的祸。我们这儿公立的孩子,最多抽个大麻,还死不了人,父母穷的多,高级毒品不流行。
