Need to balance being motivated and having perspective
I can relate to the expereince. My son just graduated, over the last year and half, I tried to encourage my son to be motivated and keep exploring what he wants and fits, at the same time, to not definte the success as one single college or even a group of colleges.
If his answer is affirmative, then he does not have a problem. Make up a list of schools with MIT on top. Visit each during the summer. He might just change his mind about which school he wants to go.
If his answer is negative, then his love of CS is not real. Need to find out what is actually motivating him.
His current mindset indicates that he doesn't know what is out there.

爹妈多提提其他学校的优点。
我知道今年2个牛娃奥计金牌的都录了Georgia tech。 估计3年都可以毕业, 然后出去赚大钱。一出一进至少省20万。
父母的期望值太高了
现在孩子不弹钢琴了,没准将来真去CMU呢,虽然MIT也算一个梦校:)
就好比是一个人可以立志去娶一个漂亮的女人为妻或者仅仅是get laid
但是最好不要立志去娶某个女人,比如说,曾经的美国甜心,Meg Ryan
一直觉得那些为了事业累死的人(没有大环境紧迫的情况下)是没学会“量力而行”的能力。
这样励志的小中男不少,都是成绩不错的,
即使最后没进M,上个H也很好嘛!
目标性强的孩子更容易引导吧
小的十一年级刚结束,自己总结的教训是:没有及早(十年级夏天)把另一个EC去掉,不够focus。供参考
十一年级AP课多的话,功课也花时间精力的
即使搞得很好,也未必能进的去,申请的变数太大,没有什么是肯定的,所以父母要和他慢慢分析清楚。

2。着手制定EC和学习计划,leadship 是一个可以着手的地方
3 给孩子打预防针,其他学校一样优秀。
虽然你认为现实差距有点大,不代表他不能创造奇迹啊。让他拼一年,总好过将来一辈子懊悔吧!
你应该做的是提醒他在时间有限的情况下做好时间管理以及抓重点。该放的就得放,全都抓着是不明智的。
反正他也不是非MIT 不上,没什么可担心的吧!

and see if he likes it. If he likes discrete math, he should be OK.
