If a picture paints a thousand 1 Then why can't I paint you? The words will never show the you I've come to 2 If a face could 3 a thousand ships Then where am I to go? There's no one 4 but you You're all that's left me to And when my love for life is 5 dry You come and 6 yourself on me If a man could be two 7 at one time I'd be with you Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way If the world should stop revolving 8 slowly down to die I'd spend the end with you And when the world was 9 Then one by one the stars would all go out Then you and I would 10 fly away

Meaning:
A reference to the mythological figure Helen of Troy (or some would say, to
Aphrodite). Her abduction by Paris was said to be the reason for a fleet of a
thousand ships to be launched into battle, initiating the Trojan Wars.
Background:
Christopher Marlowe, in Doctor Faustus (variously dated between 1590 and
1604), referring to Helen of Troy, or as Marlowe had it `Helen of Greece':
Was this the face that launch'd a thousand ships
And burnt the topless towers of Ilium?
Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss.

Yes. Cherchez la femme.
Instead of the humdrum folly, greed, vanity, etc., blame it on a woman and
you've got the idea for a good story. It's hard to imagine a movie about Troy
without Helen, Briseis, and Andromache.
I have heard rumors of your beauty. And for once, the gossip is right.

"If"是一首美国Bread(面包合唱团)在1971年《MANNA》专辑里的歌,是当时排行榜连续几周的冠军歌曲。委婉深情的曲调与清丽的木吉他淡淡地揉和在一起,如一股恬静的清泉,洗去每位听者内心的浮躁,让迷离的夜平添几分极至的宁静与安详。
If a picture paints a thousand 1
Then why can't I paint you?
The words will never show the you I've come to 2
If a face could 3 a thousand ships
Then where am I to go?
There's no one 4 but you
You're all that's left me to
And when my love for life is 5 dry
You come and 6 yourself on me
If a man could be two 7 at one time
I'd be with you
Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way
If the world should stop revolving 8 slowly down to die
I'd spend the end with you
And when the world was 9
Then one by one the stars would all go out
Then you and I would 10 fly away
