When it comes to airport expansion projects, the Gulf States are abuzz and the competition is fierce.

A mammoth airport in Saudi Arabia has already set records for size, but new plans in Dubai are ratcheting ( 1.   )the race to be the world’s busiest airport by passenger volume.

Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd International Airport currently wears the (2.    ) as the largest airport in the world by area. At a whopping 780 square kilometers (about 300 square miles), that’s bigger than neighboring country Bahrain.
