In most cases, owners don't mind people trespass those private road. but there are cases, owners put up a sign, and may actually come out and warn others not entering. I have seen both.. and police says those owners do have the right to stop others from using their road..
Just curious, in your state, does the owner still have liability if someone fell and hurt him/herself on those private road?
we live in a gentrified neighborhood downtown. We have private alleyways between some of our neighbors’ houses. Because we are downtown, sometimes we get homeless people wonder through those alleyways with their pets. Often times they don’t clean after their pets even though my neighborhood provides tons of waste bags and waste bins.
it's hard to control a dog's urination, because it's not only a function of elimination, but also used by dogs to mark their territories. Very often, the dog would ration it's volume, few drops here and there, so it can mark more "land marks", haha :)) This type of behavior is printed in their genes. However, it's absolutely the owner's responsibilities to clean up their dog's "dodo".
There are a few things you can do:
1. Put a clear sign on your lawn, maybe attach a small box containing a roll of plastic bags, like those boxes we've seen at the entrance of public parks.
2. If you have a tradition of hosting a christmas party for the neighbors, maybe you can invite this family in? Try to get to know them better, after all you are neighbors. Or just a small christmas gift, i do that every yr for my neighbors. You never know, good neighbors could make youlife easier.
It is, after all, an elderly individual holding a young toddler, dragged along by a dog, with another child in tow, up and down a steep slope. Speaking of a high risk situation!
Well, they have plenty of options on where to walk the dog.
There is a nature preserve just two minutes from the their house, easy access through public roads. It is a big, flat, and beautiful park with marked paths for humans and dogs. Why can’t their dog mark it’s territory there? The park is quite nature oriented. If the dog relieves itself couple of feet off the path, I don’t think the human would even need to pick up after the dog. Alternatively, the dog can mark their own front and back yard. Why the dog just “has to” mark MY front yard on a private road that leads to nowhere is just beyond me. The owner certainly has many options. She picks the option that happens to be the most convenient for her but the least considerate for her neighbors. So, yes, the dog “has to” urinate somewhere. But no, the dog does not “have to” urinate on MY yard.
That said, I don’t think any subtle hint would work with the family. So all I can do is a few little things here and there, and then I will come back here and vent some more...
There would be many "should" by my or your thinking, but
if we can't make people think or do what we think "should" after we made our position clear, that's what i would do if i were in your position. The family is new on the block, IMO, it's always worth a try to get to know them a little better.
I will certainly give it a try, but I am not optimistic.
We have properly introduced ourselves when they first moved to the neighborhood. Knocked on their door, brought cookies, a list of local service providers, the whole nine yards.
That is how we know of the name of each the family members, each member’s age, their careers, etc. Not sure what else is there to know other than their determination to use our private road as their dog’s private bathroom.
老太太倒是不落一拍,对哦,这家邻居我们见过面了, “She asked us to come visit”。
this is the law in my state. Not sure what is the law in your state.
Also, she should clean after her dogs. It could be a public health problem with exposed dog poops.

I actually don’t know the answer and this reminds me that I better look into this.

老太太倒是不落一拍,对哦,这家邻居我们见过面了, “She asked us to come visit”。
