Mid-Autumn 1960

A skinny kid barely 12 years old, I had a good-sized basket of scrap metal on my back. I was not alone, of course. Ahead of me were bony boys and girls about my age, all born with a burden.

Boys wore no more than worn-out shorts. Girls fared better, covering themselves in patched clothes. One of them - I couldn't help imagining - turned around and smiled at me. What a lovely twig doll! Doll or no doll, however, we all desperately needed to sell stuff for food in a marketplace beckoning from afar.

Ouch! I cut myself walking barefoot. Well, I had sold my outgrown sandals the other day.

Unusually quiet behind me was my newly widowed mother. In her arms was my baby sister, also unusually quiet.

My baby sister ended up in heaven on that market day. No one explained to me why she didn't have a chance on earth.

Nightfall came. So did moonrise. Moon-gazing refugees from the Mainland were all over Hong Kong.

A poignant, gut-wrenching read.

Thank you, 盈盈!
r
renqiulan
Thank you, waterfowl! 1960 was an "annus horribilis."
r
renqiulan
r
renqiulan
r
renqiulan
r
renqiulan
Translate the 词 into English as well?
r
renqiulan
方外居士, please be my guest!
r
renqiulan
Honestly, it is above my pay grade.

A black box model receives inputs and produces outputs but
r

its workings are unknowable.
r
renqiulan
r
renqiulan
r
renqiulan
r
renqiulan
r
renqiulan
r
renqiulan
Incidentally, language acquisition is---according to

r

I digress. My apologies.
r
renqiulan
Still, it is quite a nice punchline for a stand-up comedian.
No problem. Can you please shed your light on it?
r
renqiulan
Yup. Cold jokes...
r
renqiulan
r
renqiulan
r
renqiulan
This is my personal bias: poetry defies translation.
r
renqiulan
Classical Chinese poetry, in particular, is a minefield
r
renqiulan
with "dragon teeth" as far as translators are concerned.
You are a great candidate to take on this job.
Thanks for sharing the thinking!
r
renqiulan
I have deep respect for comedians. Why? Because...
r
renqiulan
“Dying is easy, comedy is hard.” This is a deathbed quote
r

attributed to "character actor" Edmund Gwenn.

I cannot agree more.
C

Making people laugh is a challenging and demanding job.
r
renqiulan
Naw! But I appreciate it.
r

Translation might be doable when it comes to

shine like a perfect moon.

C
CBA7
Good question. :)

renqiulan
All hope is not lost to those who dream.
r

There's a way around it, I believe.
r

r

The story is based on a senior Hong Kong citizen's

narrative of his "refugee generation."

Meaning can get as close as it can.

Good to know. Thanks for sharing.

I wrote a little poem inspired by my boy's drawing.
C

When I wrote it, I thought of your baby girl :)
C

I will keep it secret until next week,

Your idea makes sense to me. It reminds me of

The Shahnama of Firdausi, translated by A. G. Warner and E.

That sounds appetizing enough. I am looking forward to

the full version of yours.
r

You are welcome. Goodnight!
C

I bet you and your wife will like it :)

Good night, Qiulan.
颤音
a touching story and a provocative poem!
r
renqiulan
Thank you, 颤音! Heart-breaking stories keep piling up. I am

afraid that it is the worst of times in Hong Kong.
