传说作曲是莫扎特童年时专门为他姐姐所写的作品；其实这是个误传，这个曲调是源自于一首法国儿歌："Ah! vous dirai-je, maman",【妈妈请听我说】，后莫扎特依此创作了《小星星变奏曲》；这个作曲也被其它歌用到， "Alphabet song" 与 "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep".
