The good and timeless strategies usually simple and easy to understand. The complicated ones are usually taking some unknown risks. It will come to bite me some day.
As for cash, money market and T bills are simple enough. To avoid tax, take a bit more risky to buy muni.
The things like inflation protected bill, TIPs, already been approved to be junk. Lol...

现金存款利息如何不交税?
现金买BOXX ETF,这个ETF和美国短期国债T-bills一样的风险和收益,但固定收益是capital gain!不是利息或者股息。具体BOXX的介绍看这个视频:
在收到BOXX分红或者卖出BOXX的那一年,记得做tax loss harvesting制造出足够的capital loss,抵消掉BOXX的capital gain,这样BOXX产生的固定收益就不用交税了。
那到底如何做tax loss harvesting呢?
首先就是跟着论坛主流定投指数ETF。
当股市下跌时,像刚刚过去的八月,定投的ETF市价低于成本价后,直接卖出,实现 capital loss,但卖出的同时,要买入另外一支“NOT substantially identical”的ETF,保证当股市反弹后不踏空。
哪些ETF属于“substantially identical”,哪些不属于呢?国税局一直没有明说。网上的经验是,可以卖出亏损的VOO,同时买进VTI。或者卖出亏损QQQ,同时买进VUG或者VGT。

相比之下,现金存MMF,CD,HYSA以及T-bill收到的都是利息,不是capital gain。利息和股息是不用能capital loss抵消的。
如果ETF一直没有下跌的机会呢?股市一直涨的情况也有方法做tax loss harvesting,但我还不会,因为我从不short。股市一直涨就跟着论坛一起开心的数万吧 :)
另外,只是短期放cash, 市场下跌了,就卖出 BOXX 或者 T-Bills ETF, 买入SPY/QQQ, 就差别不大了吧。
