With wedding bells still ringing in our ears, we started living together in a rolling Airstream camper.
We picked up a hitchhiker halfway across continental America. Well, not exactly a hitchhiker. It was actually a silky terrier we loved to adopt from a shelter. Consider it as our first baby.
Suddenly, in one early summer evening, we had the Pacific Ocean witness the arrival of our westward wagon. We couldn't quite contain our excitement at that moment.
Also, we couldn't quite forget all the blood and tears that paved and painted the labyrinth of American history when we sat down and read our travel journal.
Our wagon was not supposed to carry historical burdens, but it somehow did. That being said, going westward was going forward. We are still going forward. History is never meant to hold us up, we believe.
Speaking of history, I recited to my new bride a new Chinese quatrain that I had just written about Chang'an, or Xi'an, where we first met --
月下诗留白,千秋一夜明。 长安如不在,还我捣衣声。
She smiled, meaning that she was clueless and therefore speechless. I smiled back. I spoke. She was all ears --

Under the moon, a poem
begs to fill in the blanks
that'll enlighten millennia
tonight.
Chang'an, are you still with me?
If not, then I must be owed
the sounds of pounding
my ancient clothes.
