The Joint Chiefs meanwhile while having some difficulty with the general Ridgeway, who had become thoroughly exasperated with the communist tactics of argument, invective and harassment. He recommended The United Nations “get tough” with the Reds, and said diplomatic language was useless in these military talks. “To sit down with these men and deal with them as the representatives of an enlightenment and civilized people”, he complained to the Chiefs on August 6, “ is to deride one’s own dignity and to invite the disaster their treachery will inevitably bring upon us.” He wanted to tell the UN delegates to “employ such language and methods and these treacherous savages cannot fail to understand, and understanding, respect.” The Chiefs calmed Ridgway down and the talks went on.
So did the fighting. Ridgway got permission from Truman to make a major air strike on the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, which took place on July 30, and he also sought a combined naval and air attack against the North Korean port city of Rashin (Najin), only a few miles from the Soviet border. The decision on Rashin also went all the way up to the President, who approved a JCS recommendation for an air strike, but not naval bombardment. The attack against Rashin was carried out August 25 by thirty-five B-29 bombers under navy fighter escort.
Ridgway also approved General Van Fleet’s Operation Talons, a proposed attack designed to straighten out the Eighth Army line from Kumwha to Kansong (on the east coast) in the central and eastern sectors. Talons ultimately never was attempted because the evidence of what such an operation would cost became gruesomely evident as a result of a limited attack which Van Fleet ordered in the X Corps area. This attack, which acquired the highly appropriate, if journalistic, name of the Battle of Bloody Ridge, was to demonstrated the true nature of battle between armies deeply emplaced on heavily defended main lines of resistance.

The Joint Chiefs meanwhile while having some difficulty with the general Ridgeway, who had become thoroughly exasperated with the communist tactics of argument, invective and harassment.

To sit down with these men and deal with them as the representatives of an enlightenment and civilized people

To sit down with these men and deal with them as the representatives of an enlightenment and civilized people
