昨天接到国内好友电话，说她儿子（中国护照）的美国学生签证卡壳了：学生现人在美国，今年5月份在芝加哥本科毕业，准备9月份到纽约读研究生。本来他本科毕业前应该申请OPT，这样研究生学校可以把他的学生签证续上。但是孩子根本不知道，等到昨天需要交租房子的合法身份证明才发现旧的F1马上过期了。Grace Period 还有4天。现在回国办签证根本不可能。请教是否可以有办法呆在美国把签证续上？或者应该怎么办？多谢多谢！！

-Is he accepted by a graduate school for graduate program study? If yes, just ask thge graduate school to issue him a I-20 bfore the grace period ends and he will be fine. If he is not accepted by a graduate school, he can aks his current school to extend his I-20 and file OPT application before the grace period ends. As long as the I-20 is extended within the grace period (i.e. the International Student Office put the extension information in SEVIS), he will be fine even if the OPT application is sent out a few days later after the grace period.
The grace period is counted from the expiration date of I-20. So, check the I-20 to count it. If the grace period has expired, he may has to get the F-1 visa outside US to come back.
