Mathematics is an international subject in which the principal languages are English, French, German, and Russian. For the PhD, every student is required to acquire an ability to read mathematics in one of these three foreign languages. The student’s competence is demonstrated by passing a two-hour written examination. Usually the student is asked to translate into English a page of text from a mathematics book or journal. Students may, if they wish, use a dictionary. If another language is specifically appropriate to the student’s PhD program, the student may request approval from the director of graduate studies to substitute that language. If a student has studied undergraduate mathematics in a language other than English, the student may request to have the language requirement waived.
The language requirement should be fulfilled by the end of the second year.
孩子在小学阶段，时间充裕，想自己加一门二外，学二外是孩子现在课外时间多，而网上学语言资料丰富，几乎不花钱，小学阶段也是语言黄金期，记忆力好使。
学什么二外好呢？不考虑中文，我们家中文不是外语，中文是母语，娃已经在阅读中文书。认字还行。
不想学拉丁文，想学的二外，能和人实际交流。拉丁文不是实际使用的语言。不想学西班牙语，美国会西语的太多，还有点俗里俗气的。
考虑法语和俄语，觉得法语和俄语里面蕴藏的艺术和数学资源都很丰富，这两种语言都有上亿人使用。法语可以装高雅，俄语说起来实在好听，妹子说俄语，我的心都化了。
考虑到这两个国家的大学学费都很低廉，如果将来不能在北美读个名校，去法国和俄国念一个名校理工科专业，性价比也很高。上海鸡娃界现在流行学法语，都准备去法国留学，2000欧元一年，涨了价还是便宜。坛子里也有去巴黎高等师范读数学的牛蛙。
而去莫斯科和圣彼得堡读数学的人回来说，那里的数学系，数学和计算机编程是连在一起，名校非常严格，外国留学生淘汰率百分之六十，卢布再贬值，读书是白送，性价比美国的cc和一般州大高多了。
法语作为加拿大的官方语言，加一分，以后在加拿大找政府工，会法语是否有加分优势，娃出生在加拿大。
而俄罗斯也是打不垮的国家，以后长期做北美的敌人，更需要了解俄语的人不是。俄罗斯的数学物理一直是逆天的存在。学他们的语言不亏。
目前想利用网上资源学，不考虑去Immersion学校，目标是能学到b2水平，b2大概是能去那里的大学上课的水平。

儿子同学的妈妈是曾是国务院主管欧洲欧亚助卿，从小学俄语，Y的俄国研究毕业。另一个同学的爸爸国务院东亚助卿，莫斯科大学博士
不过至今一点也不后诲读博。
他们同一级有两个白男读数学博士，一个Berkeley, 好像另一个芝大。
他一个朋友(不是亚裔)今年拿到CMU CS博士录取，居然有想法明年再冲SM，真是比亚裔还看重学校综合名气
不过，娃高中修了三门外语。
他说不用学法语，大部分欧洲人都会英语，用英语交流即可，应把时间拿来学真正有用的东西。
和他们同学去年几个选SM CS博士的都是亚裔和中国小留。
法国名校也是有要求的。上海的鸡娃界已经在流行小娃读法语，将来去法国留学。法国大学实在便宜。
再说，去法国和俄罗斯读大学，学个艺术或者理工科，性价比高。卢布贬值更好。读书不花钱，哪里有更好的事。
