I also have a tendency to use the word “very”a lot. It's a lazy habit.

Those words on the right hand side are very British

American way of English tends to be simplified but more catchy and more straightforward.
for example, action movie hero Arnold Swacnager's famous quote "Get the chopper!""I will be back ". Plain, simple but carries such powerful force.
The other classic example is MAGA. Every word is no higher than 3rd grade level. But it's extremely appealing to its audience.

those fancy British English words are only for well educated nerds.

Are you sure?

The American Heritage Dictionary begins with 'Chiefly British' for an entry word that is used mainly by the islanders.

I haven't checked them all but will bet that none of the words are 'chiefly british.'

Shouldn't it be "very scared" instead of "very scary"?

It’s perfectly okay to say very in colloquial English unless

you want to talk and sound like Zbignew Brezinski.
