麻烦各位美语大拿看看120多年前一个美国人写的书里的一句话。我怎么觉得有点问题

只需看第一句。我怎么觉得多了三个字。这三个字一多出来，就使得句子貌似一个主系表结构句但失去了表语，而实际上应该是个被动式的主谓宾句。

 

语法没错，"that" 就是表语。 但写得太绕，或可改成

“One of the most distinctive features of Chinese society is epitomised...”

您这个就顺眼多了。也许是古代人说话比较文

我觉得按照现在的习惯，应该把

which改成it,

One of the most distinctive features of Chinese society is that it is epitomised....

这样写反而给人喘气的机会，is that我脑子里可以把前面的放下，专注后面的表/定语从句

没有that让我暂停一下，我会从头到尾当作一整个大长句

One of the most distinctive features of Chinese Society is what is epitomized in the word "responsibility", a word carrying significance and embracing a wealth of meaning, is totally strange to western land.

作为书本语言，这个写的糟糕。可能作者写的时候是不够清晰。

奥，明白了。what=that which。我觉得都对。

There are many ways to say this, but the author picks a way

that he even cannot pass English 1A  class.
