How can a supervisor be seen to be lectured, in front of his subordinates, by someone who is not his boss? This is not a criticism of you, but trying to see what he saw. He may be thin-skinned, or wants to look tough to his employees.
"Sorry my tips offended you." Say it with a laugh. You look more magnanimous this way.
Your reply is quite a zinger, may be a better one for the setting, but it's kind of pushing the edge. If he has a girlfriend that he cares much and people know her, and he feels the need to defend her honor, things can get out of hand quickly.
