The former Axis powers are not remotely comparable to Afghanistan. Both had functioning modern societies prior to their imperialist adventures and wanted them back. Germany in particular was unpolluted by religion. In Japan MacArthur wisely left Shinto alone and adminstered de-facto conditional surrender. Both were organized, disciplined cultures with strong nationalist identities. They were the opposite of Afghanistan in every respect.
Afghanistan will regroup as Afghans see fit. Westerners always want to be involved when they should GTFO and stay in their box. We don't help people, we kill them and implode their societies. The best thing the rest of the world can do when visited by my do-gooder fellow citizens is drive them off with maximum violence, including NGOs because those are the camel's nose under the tent. (Those fond of NGOs can join foreign outfits run by people from saner cultures.)
Every desire to intervene (including "help") should be knifed in the crib. Intentions are irrelevant. The body count from American good intentions is staggering. We don't serve our own people or anyone else. We just fail and make things worse thanks to cultural incompetence. Isolationism is better than perpetual failure but our exceptionalist self-image isn't nearly done breaking victim societies. Our people have no conscience, just "feelings", social ignorance, hubris, stupidity and greed. We should confine ourselves to defending culturally compatible nations and fully internalize what that means which is not racist.
What is racist/ethnicist/bigoted is the idea Americans are suited to be messiahs of democracy. Watch the aftermath of A-stan. Nearly all the regret will be that we somehow "did it wrong" when there was no possible "right" way to do it.
