https://www.quora.com/Why-do-people-back-up-into-parking-spaces

Backing up at some point is largely unavoidable, since most parking spots
require the driver to either back into the spot or back out of the spot. It
’s just a matter of performing that backing at the safest time and
situation.

Backing into a spot isn’t the safest thing in the world but there are a
number of things that combine to make backing in and “fronting out” safer to “heading in” and backing out.

When approaching my house to park, I get a great view of my parking spot and the path to it without having to crane my head around 90 degrees or
backwards to get this view. This path is in my normal field of view, right
up to the point where I start to back up. It’s possible that a kid could
have hidden behind the other vehicle, and they could walk out, directly into my parking spot right as I start backing up, but the odds are against that happening. In my experience, children do not move toward a nearby, moving
vehicle. Most importantly, even if that were to happen, I still have a good chance to see them as I backed up, as long as I (and my mirrors) are
positioned properly for backing up.

I will admit that pulling head-first into a parking spot (by itself) has to be safer than backing into that same spot. And if I was driving a car that
could somehow magically never have to be backed out of the spot later, then parking “head-in” would be the safer overall choice. However, backing out of a spot is so much more dangerous compared to driving forward out of a
spot (and remember that you have to either back in or back out of most
spaces) that backing in plus driving forward out of a spot is the overall
safest combination, as compared to parking “head in” plus backing out, as a combination.

When I get in my car to leave, I typically do not walk a complete circle
around the vehicle, so it’s possible that a child could be playing on the
ground, (with sidewalk chalk or something similar) in a pretty big spot
behind the vehicle, where the vehicle would completely block my view of them. If I were to get in, start up the vehicle, and back out, I could run over a child in such a position, having never seen them. This situation would not require the child to move toward a moving vehicle; they would only have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and fail to move out of the way in
time.

If backing out means backing into a public road (as it does at my house),
there is the whole aspect of approaching traffic, where backing in and “
fronting out” is still marginally safer: When approaching my house to back in, I have a good view of street traffic in one direction as I approach my
house. I have just approached my house from the other direction (and that
direction is also in my rear view mirror, so I usually have a good sense of what might be coming from that direction as well. If someone is following me closely or approaching my house from the other direction, I can “park” on the street right in front of my house until it’s clear and then back in
once it’s clear. On the other hand, when backing out, my rear view mirrors don’t help me see in the directions where traffic could approach from (
right or left); I have to keep swinging my head back and forth 180 degrees (while facing backward as much as possible) to make sure no one is coming
while I back into the road.
