我已经在一个烂校干了5年，这次是Tenure前重新上Market。所以我向新学校要了 Associate Professor Title, Tenure Clock shorten 到三年。新的系主任认为我只有一次再评 Tenure 的机会，所以没必要提三年，you want as much flexibility as possible. 大家觉得他的想法对么？还是Shorten到三年？
As someone who has served as a search committee chair or a member for several faculty positions, my understanding is that an offer should be consistent with what is posted in the job description. If the position title is at the assistant professor rank, the department chair/head even the college dean cannot change it without an approval from the provost through HR. Even if the title is changed to the associate professor rank, then they are likely to restart the search for applicants who meet the new requirements. Otherwise, others can sue the university for not following EEO.
Second, for your own benefit, I suggest that you start from the assistant professor rank. Your start salary will be higher than a fresh Ph.D. or someone with just postdoc experiences. This will allow you two opportunities to raise your salary- one when you are promoted to associate professor with tenure (about 10% of raise), and another when you are promoted to the full professor rank. But you may ask for 2-3 years of credits toward your promotion with tenure. However, it should be your prerogative to rescind the credits. Otherwise, an early promotion still requires the same credentials as someone who has spent 5 years as an assistant professor, which puts you in a greater pressure.

你可以直接问系主任，是否是讨论start up package和实验室等。
你老婆工作问题感觉早了些。除非你是senior的move。
要不然junior没啥bargain power。要么你是个star。

我觉得要Associate professor title有俩好处。一是工资比assistant professor高，二是做五年associate professor之后就可以申请full professor，然后就没有人可以
在评职称上卡你的脖子了。
