The photo is from the Jacob H. Schiff Chinese expedition which was led by Berthold Laufer from 1901 to 1904. Along with other objects, Laufer sent the American Museum of Natural History approximately 143 photographic prints and a list of associated captions. According to the museum, the photo is a genuine picture from the turn of the century and in their opinion was likely taken between 1901 and 1904 - the dates of Laufer’s trip. While it’s sometimes claimed that the man was having his photo taken at Laufer’s request in order to demonstrate the eating of this staple of the Chinese diet, there is no documented evidence that this is actually the case. Further rumors that the man struck his happy pose as he had no knowledge of etiquette in photography at the time can likewise not be substantiated by any documented evidence. All that can be said is that it was taken sometime around the end of the 19th or early 20th centuries, and it was collected by Laufer and sent back to the American Museum of Natural History during his 1901-1904 expedition.

你好，日本友人🐶 以前听说中朝边境，一袋大米换个老婆，想想还是很苦的，以前我们大陆何尝不是，好好珍惜现在的生活。
我小时候经常听我爸妈说他们小时候逢年过节才能吃饱饭，平时都是稀粥咸菜的。而我自己的小时候家里也很拮据，学校组织春游同学们各种带零食饮料水果玩具，而我的包里仅仅是一盒我妈前一晚炒的饭和一瓶白开水，大学一个月就300块生活费，直到我工作挣钱后才有了如今不愁吃穿的生活。
我们中国人真是世界上最勤劳最勤奋的民族了，每个工作的普通人都会这个国家贡献了自己的力量，只是国家的发展的红利啥时候可以兑现啊😌
