The fashion industry lost a towering great talent today. British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead, having committed suicide, British media has reported. The sudden and shocking loss of the 40-year-old prolific talent sent shock waves throughout the fashion industry as it gathered in New York for the start of New York Fashion Week. McQueen was set to unveil his new collection at Paris Fashion Week on March 9.
The suicide comes just three years after his close friend, Isabella Blow, who discovered McQueen and helped him rise to stardom, killed herself, reported Britain's Daily Mail.
A source at McQueen’s office confirmed his death, saying: "It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family."
Media reports said Scotland Yard confirmed that they had been called to an address in Green Street known to be Alexander McQueen's by an ambulance service at 10.20am and that a man, aged 40, had been found dead at the scene. “The death is being treated as non-suspicious,” a spokesperson said.
London's Evening Standard suggested the designer was unable to cope with the passing of his mother. The designer's Twitter feed has already been removed, but the Wall Street Journal noted that on Feb. 3 he had written that his mother passed away the day before. He tweeted “RIP mumxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,” and a few minutes later: “But life must go on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
His last tweet, sometime after Feb. 7, said: “I’m here with my girl Annie Tinkerbell wishing Kerry the slag, happy birthday in NY, your [sic] 40 now girl time to slow it down we think.”
Born Lee Alexander McQueen, the designer was the youngest of six children and the son of a taxi driver, living in the East End. His start in fashion came on Savile Row, where he cut his teeth on the heritage of classic tailoring working for Anderson & Sheppard, whose clients included Prince Charles and Mikhail Gorbachev. He went on to later win the distinction of being named British designer of the year four times between 1996 and 2003.
His career took him to Gieves & Hawkes, theatre’s famous Angels & Bermans costumiers, and then on to Japan and Italy. In 1994 he returned to London to work as a pattern cutter tutor at London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins fashion school.
After graduating, he returned to his roots in London's East End and established his own label. By 1996 he was named head designer at Givenchy, succeeding John Galliano, before joining forces with Gucci, who bought 51% of his company.
Amongst his other achievements, he was awarded the CBE, and was named International Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer Awards.
He would also earn the fashion industry's affectionate title of 'enfant terrible' as being famously discovered by Isabella Blow, who was fashion director of Tatler. Miss Blow killed herself in May 2007 and had attempted suicide several times by then.
Sources said that McQueen had also been terribly distraught by Isabella’s death. He would later dedicate his spring summer 2008 show at Paris fashion week to his late friend.
Sue Whiteley, his former CEO at McQueen, told London's Evening Standard: “This is devastating news. He was an unforgettable part of my life. He was a talent who was beyond others. People who worked with him would give 100% and more because he was totally inspiring. This is an unimaginable loss for the fashion world. He was able to bring creativity to whatever he turned his hand to, from perfume bottles to every piece of clothing. It is a dark, dark day to hear this news. he was a British icon in fashion whose loss is unimaginable.”
Alexandra Shulman, editor of British Vogue also added: "He was the most brilliant designer of his generation and his influence can be seen in the way that women dressed over the last 15 years. It is an incredible loss not only for British fashion but for fashion the world over.”
