He said even the cord blood cells are healthy, the amount is saved by current technology is not enough to put in any kind of therapy at all. That is the opinion from all the researchers and physician I have consulted with. So basically, there is almost no use for saving cord blood, not to mention there is lost of cells and contamination during storage and retriveing of cells.

well, we can afford it, our oncologist friend made a good point, although not much use now, but who knows what's going to happen in 20 years. And if one day we really need to use it (hopefully not), if all that money can buy even just little more time for my babies, then it is worth it.

Just like I said, It may not actually be useful at all. Because say if something come up in 20 years (hopefully not), the cells saved now from a new born is definitly not gonna be enough for therapy for an adult. I'm not concerning about the money spent. I just doubt if it is applicable at all. I am in the research field myself and our lab is full of oncologists. They are all rich and none of them saved cord blood.
In one case it may or may not work. If you save cord blood from one kid, the cells may be used by siblings if the sibling is still little kid. ( assume their cells match each other which is about 1/4 chance, i am not sure about this). But in this case, the healthy kid can donate healthy cells to the sick sibling anytime, there is no need to save and store cells from cord blood.
In addition, as one previous reply said. if the kid is sick at young age, the cord blood cells are already not healthy. What I learned if an adult is sick, then the cord blood cells saved when he was born are very possible unhealthy. even the cells were healthy, there won't be enough for treating an adult. Hopefully I explained it clear.
