Yes, you can use your own E-PASS transponder, such as a Uni or portable E-PASS, in a rental car in Florida, provided it’s compatible with the toll system and the vehicle is of the same class (e.g., two axles) as the one registered to your transponder. The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) allows this, but there are important steps to follow to avoid issues like double billing or unexpected fees. Registration Requirements You must register the rental car’s license plate with your E-PASS account before using the transponder in the rental vehicle. This ensures tolls are charged to your E-PASS account and not the rental car company’s toll program, which often includes additional fees. Here’s what you need to do: • Update your E-PASS account: Log in to your E-PASS account online or via the E-PASS mobile app to add the rental car’s license plate number. You’ll also need to provide the vehicle’s make, model, year, color, and number of axles. • Set rental period: Specify the start and end dates for the rental period to link the transponder to the rental car only during your use. After returning the car, remove or deactivate the rental car’s plate from your account to avoid being charged for tolls incurred by future renters. • Inform the rental company: Notify the rental car agency that you’re using your own E-PASS transponder to avoid conflicts with their toll program. Some rental cars have built-in transponders (e.g., PlatePass or SunPass), which may need to be disabled (e.g., kept in a shield box or closed) to ensure your E-PASS is read instead. Potential Issues and Tips • Double billing risk: If the rental car has an active transponder and you don’t disable it (e.g., by keeping it in a lead-lined box or closing the shield), both your E-PASS and the rental company’s transponder could register tolls, leading to double charges. • Check rental agreement: Review the rental company’s toll policy, as some may charge administrative fees for tolls even if you use your own transponder. Confirm with the agency that you’re opting out of their toll program. • Toll compatibility: E-PASS (including Uni) works on all Florida toll roads and is interoperable with E-ZPass systems in 19 states, making it versatile for travel. Practical Steps 1. Before driving, add the rental car’s license plate to your E-PASS account. 2. Ensure the rental car’s transponder is disabled (e.g., closed in its shield box or wrapped in foil if removable). 3. Place your E-PASS transponder correctly (e.g., on the windshield or as instructed for the Uni). 4. After returning the car, remove the rental plate from your E-PASS account to prevent erroneous charges.
不建议用自己车的,听说过有人ended being charged twice, once on the rental car, 2nd time on the tag.
