其实有经验的妈妈都知道,华人小孩人手一个义工奖,同质化太高,搞不好还反作用
义工要找well established 组织。图书馆,animal shelter, YMCA, parks… 这些都不发义工奖,没关系,申请时把小时数写上,招生官都明白。
千万不要信那些在微信群里拉人的组织
做义工不等于申请这个奖啊。我家的义工时间超过那些申请这个奖的人,一次都没申请。
现在还在发帖打广告呢。
我女儿是虽然从来不申请这个奖,但是每年的时间是够了。主要的时间是:假期在summer camp做义工,一个星期40个小时,做三四个星期,包括春假;再平常做中文学校ta,一个星期光是上课时间就2个小时。这些一点都不耽误自己搞其他ec。比起来,感觉更耽误的是春季的体育,跟很多活动,包括ap考试都overlap。
这是两个不同的奖。你家女儿太牛了。
自己搞,自己的娃当president,自己的娃的时间随便填呗 所以说玩烂了
有个税号就可以,是不是非盈利组织都无所谓 填个时间就好,交几块钱

这样想是天真了。申请大学的时候,没有空间让你写很多小项的,评估人也没有那么多时间。
义工奖的一个作用,就是把多个小项成就合成一个大项成就,方便评估人来评估。
那如果孩子长期做的义工只有一两项就不会有这个问题了吧。我们本来就打算把孩子的义工放在activities里写。

这种情况是可以的。但也有不少小孩做了很多义工,但分散在不同的活动上,取消义工奖对那样的小孩是不利的。
的确没有空间写小奖 如果需要写这个奖,只能说没有别的更好的奖 并不能合并什么
需要纠结这些的话,其实说明这些义工活动不会对录取起太大作用。当然说的是top 大学。义工关键是得有impact.所以说这个奖作用不大。做再多小时,说不出有啥impact也不管用。
如果说花了时间领不到奖 最着急的就是那些微信里到处拉人的义工组织者了 现在肯定是开始画饼 给国内的娃娃念本英文书都能忽悠出领导力 生怕抬轿子的跑了

如果小孩有IMO金牌级别的大奖,确实是不需要义工奖的。
义工奖比较适合stem成绩优秀,有一些奖项却又没有达到IMO金牌级别,体育方面一般的小孩。它可以证明小孩除了学习,还愿意拿时间关心公益活动,不是只会读书。
说到底,义工奖只是一个加分项。它不能让小孩进T5,但也许可以帮助小孩进T20,或者进入竞争激烈的大公立热门专业。
做好事需要各种形式的鼓励,让人们自觉不自觉地为社会做贡献。要不然为啥富豪们办基金会做慈善,政府给免税。孩子们拿个奖牌都要取消,干吗不把慈善基金会的免税给取消了。一天到晚拿平头老百姓开刀。

有些历史悠久的大机构搞的义工还是不错的 微信里为了自己娃到处拉人的义工群真是忽悠一个算一个
前几年玩的人不多,20-21年的娃可能有点用 疫情以后online tutoring开始流行 非盈利都在搞这个,没啥特色了,ao都看吐了

这是个plus,光靠这个是不行的,也不是说没它不可。说白了,有奥数金牌的不需要,成绩太差的也不需要(反正没用)。
有其它加分项也可以,比如说体育成绩很好也可以,总之不要让人觉得小孩除了读书和stem活动,就没有别的了。

管的活动很多,500个员工平均一个人动员了1万人做义工,我觉得是很值。

你说的总统奖和这个帖子说的不是一个奖。你的那个是SAT1590以上才有资格申请的奖,这个是做义工小时到了就可以得的奖。
不管动机如何,毕竟还是做了,总比大家都不去做义工强吧。有谁做事情又是完全无私的。

义工奖至少鼓励孩子们做义工(即使有注水嫌疑),但带来的积极意义比负面意义大多了,孩子在经历中学到东西,对社会有付出贡献,怎么都是应该鼓励的,就算不能100%有效,但水至清无鱼的道理不懂吗。
以前卷义工奖的,估计很快又会找到新的卷方向,比如高中生科研,会多起来吧
这个我们也不知道,就是康嫂看到这个说是个加分项。我家娃stem活动多,在学校自己的乐团拉拉大提琴,除此没有什么别的特长。每个小孩的情况都不一样吧,不好以偏概全。
嗯嗯,的确不能一概而论 很多义工还是挺锻炼小孩子的 那些在微信里家长到处摇人的还是算了吧
