A Distant Firecracker’s Song
Here, the snow falls soft, a quiet hush, while memories of home rise in a crimson flush. Across the ocean, where the lanterns glow, my heart beats heavy with the weight of "long ago."
The kitchen hums with scents of ginger, star anise, my hands knead dough, a bridge to what I miss. The dumplings fold, each pleat a whispered prayer, for family far away, their laughter in the air.
Back home, the streets would burst with red and gold, firecrackers singing stories yet untold. The dragon dances, weaving through the crowd, its fiery breath a promise, fierce and proud.
But here, the silence stretches, vast and wide, a world away from where my roots reside. I hang red paper, cut with careful hand, to summon fortune in this foreign land.
My children laugh, their voices bright and clear, they ask, "What does the New Year mean, my dear?" I tell them of the past, of ancestors' grace, of hope that blooms in every time and place.
Yet in my heart, a quiet ache remains, for parents left behind, their love, their pains. Their faces, lined with years I did not share, their voices, faint, like echoes in the air.
I see my mother’s hands, so frail, so kind, folding jiaozi, her thoughts with me aligned. My father’s smile, though weary, still so warm, a steady flame through every storm.
I call them now, their voices crack, they say, "Take care, my child, on this New Year’s Day." Their words, a thread that binds me to the past, a lifeline strong, though oceans keep us vast.
There, in China, midnight’s bell has rung, fireworks explode, and ancient songs are sung. But here, the sun climbs high, a golden blaze, its light a mirror to their festive haze.
The time between us stretches, thin and wide, a day apart, yet still we’re side by side. Their night, my day—two worlds, one shared embrace, a single heartbeat spanning time and space.
Though miles may part us, love will bridge the stream, and home is not just places, but a dream. So here, beneath this cold and distant sky, I light a spark, and let my spirit fly.
For though I’m far, my heart still knows the way, to where the firecrackers light the Lunar Day. And in this quiet, I find a strength anew— a Chinese soul, beneath a foreign hue.
Gong Xi Fa Cai, I whisper to the light, may fortune find us, near and far, alight. For home is where the heart dares to belong, a distant firecracker’s everlasting song.
And to my parents, aging, far from view, I send this wish, my love, forever true: May time be kind, and may your hearts stay strong, until the day I find my way back home.
