Baker was born in Seattle, Washington on October 6, 1962. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1984. He completed his doctorate in biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley in 1989 in the laboratory of Randy Schekman, where he worked predominantly on protein transport and trafficking in yeast. In 1993, he completed his postdoctoral training in biophysics with David Agard at the University of California, San Francisco. Baker joined the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Washington School of Medicine as faculty in 1993. He became a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator in 2000.[11]Baker was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciencesin 2009.[12]

Following Elixir Studios, Hassabis returned to academia to obtain his PhD in cognitive neuroscience from University College London (UCL) in 2009 supervised by Eleanor Maguire.[2] He sought to find inspiration in the human brain for new AI algorithms.[33] He continued his neuroscience and artificial intelligence research as a visiting scientist jointly at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in the lab of Tomaso Poggio, and Harvard University,[4] before earning a Henry Wellcome postdoctoral research fellowship to the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at UCL in 2009 working with Peter Dayan.
Jumper was educated at the University of Chicago where he was awarded a PhD in 2017 for research on using machine learning to simulate protein folding and dynamics, being co-supervised by Tobin R Sosnick and Karl Freed.[1] Jumper also received an MPhil in theoretical condensed matter physics at the University of Cambridge, where he was on the Marshall Scholarship at St Edmund''s College,[13][14] and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics from Vanderbilt University.[3] In 2021, Jumper was awarded the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awardin the category "Biology and Biomedicine".[17] In 2022 Jumper received the Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences[18] and for 2023 the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for developing AlphaFold, which accurately predicts the structure of a protein.[19] In 2023 he was awarded the Canada Gairdner International Award[20] and the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research.[21]

all in CS
