收藏的文物是博物馆花钱买来的，也有人捐赠，例如，收藏家斯隆医生（Hans Sloane, 1660-1753）捐赠的文物包括大英博物馆第一批中国文物一百多件。斯隆没有去过中国，他购买其他私人藏家的藏品。中国品藏只占他收藏的极少部分。
