一般来说重要场次的主角都是principal，比如天鹅湖周末晚场的黑白天鹅；次主角一般是soloist或者second soloist，比如天鹅湖里的大天鹅和四小天鹅；群舞演员是title最低的，通常叫artist或者底下有层主提到的corps de ballet。不那么重要的场次的主角有时候也会让soloist甚至于second soloist上，比如周末下午场，或者周中的晚场，不过这种主角也多半都是快要被promote的signal了。大团的principal也会有很多的，一男一女相对固定搭配，通常都是按身高配的。大团的话，每个场次上场的主角组合不同，通常同一天甚至连续两天都不会是同样的主演（或者可能有同样演员但角色不同）。跳一场很累的，而且需要有演员备份，以防万一原定cast受伤了需要替补。演出一般都会提前公布casting（演员表）供观众选择场次买票。

有没有配对这个不一定的，要看角色需要。比如胡桃夹子里面的阿拉伯舞和中国舞，很多团的编舞都是一男一女组合，经常是俩soloist/second soloist搭配，casting特别好的时候也可能遇上principal，很一般的时候会有artist（也就是corps de ballet)。

芭蕾舞团大小和观众，市场有关。香港芭蕾舞团 4 月份有一场演出， 5 月 0 场， 6 月有 3 场演出。principal dancer 多了也没剧演，没观众看。

比较一下莫斯科的 Bolshoi，光看了 4 月份，每周 3 场芭蕾，而且有不同的芭蕾舞剧。她们有 8 位 prima ballerina, 10 位 principle （男）dancer。
