If it is under the kid''''s SSN it is his/hers but as secondary owner you can probably cash it under your SSN when you redeem. At least that''''s how paper ibonds work.
paper ibond you just deposit into a bank they will ask you under with SSN you want to redeem and furniture you with a 1099. not sure about electronic ibond, I believe you have to send in a form (to treasurydirect) and they deposit the fund to your bank account.
