Since EDI''s creation in the 1960s, transportation protocols for EDI documents have also been evolving. Currently, you can send EDI documents over FTP(SFTP), HTTPS, or any legacy transportation protocols as long as both business partners agree to it. As for automation, there are many integration platforms available to automate EDI transactions no matter the transport protocols. You can also create your own program to pick up EDI documents (files) sent via FTP or HTTP, parse them and then do whatever you want with the content. But nowadays, it is more common to use an integration platform to automate EDI transactions.
