不过请个升学顾问,还远不至于“完全由别人安排人生”。相信有很多人不觉得自己能够完全正确指导孩子,又怕耽误孩子,请个顾问,买个安心。也许不请,结果也差不多。

有很多英语是母语的人做升学顾问的,不仅仅是讲中文的人。而且,升学顾问和editor并不一定是同一个人。
当然可以找英文老师或者英文好的亲朋好友帮忙,但也有很多人因为这样那样的原因没有这样的资源。
每个家庭的情况不一样,有的人不介意花这笔钱,有的人觉得不值。看自己的需要和情况而定。
问题是在美国申请大学,学习成绩并不是唯一的指标。而且说实话,除了那些hard core的学校和专业,其他的学校与专业,大部分的华人孩子都可以念下来的。
至少我们请顾问并不是为了提高成绩,我家孩子的成绩已经是同年级的top 1%。她今年的录取结果不错,但他们学校有录取Yale, Princeton,Harvard的,学习成绩都不如她。我不觉得她上这几所学校会很挣扎。就像我说的,如果不介意花请顾问的钱,也不会引起家里的矛盾,而且也有靠谱的顾问,那就花。
其实归根结底就是这笔钱值不值得的问题。在顾问靠谱的前提下,其他的理由都不成立。这就像去藤校还是去旗舰公立的问题,有的父母认为不值得多付那么多钱去藤校,有的父母认为值得。就是这么回事

不知道自己想干啥的最应该去私立大学。因为入学专业不定;即使二年级定了专业之后,想换也很容易,只要能把专业规定的课都修完,啥时候换专业都行。

哈哈,这样说我家孩子有可能能做到D1。不过D1 的大学太多了,很多还是华人根本看不上眼的学校。

不是这样,我对他们挺满意的。那几个上大藤的都有别人没有的优势,而我们去了自己想去的学校,也是藤校。与排名相比,是否适合对我们更重要。
我说那些只是想证明,学习成绩并不是申请大学的唯一,或者说最重要的指标。孩子优秀,不需要任何帮助就上了顶尖的学校,当然很好,还省钱。但另一方面,在升学顾问的帮助下上了很好的大学,也不会存在挣扎毕业,甚至以后堪忧的情况。
定义什么是好的D1?SEC,ACC,Big10, Pac12还是华人关注的ivy league?
赞👍。有想法有主见有行动力,聪明反而没那么重要。教书这么多年,看得很清楚。成功几大要素:不笨,目的性强,有精力不怕累,脸皮厚 。
我认识的上藤校的也是这样的情况。不认识靠顾问上名校的。

你看看孩子的同学和周围的同龄人 如果大多数都请了升学顾问 大体上你们也会请 不然别人有各种包装 最后上了一个比较好的学校 自己孩子上的学校普通 到时候孩子和家长都会跺脚。 这种peer pressure 在升学的时候 会格外的明显吧。如果不在乎大学排名 就是想读个大学 读个喜欢的专业 根本不需要找这些顾问!
