The spousal benefit can be as much as half of the worker's "primary insurance amount," depending on the spouse's age at retirement. If the spouse begins receiving benefits before "normal (or full) retirement age," the spouse will receive a reduced benefit. However, if a spouse is caring for a qualifying child, the spousal benefit is not reduced. If a spouse is eligible for a retirement benefit based on his or her own earnings, and if that benefit is higher than the spousal benefit, then we pay the retirement benefit. Otherwise we pay the spousal benefit.

The average of your earnings over your working years, not the total number of credits you earn, determines how much your monthly payment will be when you receive benefits.

”The average of your earnings over your working years”,这个working years是35年。
https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/credits.html The number of credits does not affect the amount of benefits you receive. We use the amount of credits you’ve earned to determine your eligibility for retirement or disability benefits, as well as your family’s eligibility for survivors benefits when you die. Since 1978, you earn up to a maximum of four credits per year. Credits are based on your total wages and self-employment income for the year. You might work all year to earn four credits, or you might earn enough for all four in much less time. The amount of earnings it takes to earn a credit may change each year. In 2022, you earn one Social Security or Medicare credit for every $1,510 in covered earnings each year. You must earn $6,040 to get the maximum four credits for the year. During your lifetime, you might earn more credits than the minimum number you need to be eligible for benefits. These extra credits do not increase your benefit amount. How Social Security benefits are calculated Your Social Security benefits are determined based on your highest 35 years of inflation-indexed earnings (meaning, your income is adjusted for inflation year after year). If you have fewer than 35 years of eligible earnings on record, then for each year you don't have an income on file, Social Security will factor $0 into your equation. Then, when an average of your earnings is taken, those $0 years will bring down the total amount you're eligible for in benefits.

What?
The file and suspend strategy worked if you attained your full retirement age and suspended benefits prior to April 30, 2016. Currently, you can still suspend benefits, but your spouse will be unable to claim a spousal benefit while you do so.
No。

mark

During your lifetime, you might earn more credits than the minimum number you need to be eligible for benefits. These extra credits do not increase your benefit amount.
