I don’t know about chemistry per se, but unfunded academic positions do exist in the sciences—the assumption is that you find your own funding, and the university merely supplies an institutional affiliation. This appeared, to me at least, to be an unusually blatant variation of that. In the humanities, on the other hand, there are plenty of these things, although they’re usually not openly advertised.

不拿工资的职称很多的。最常见的就是很多UCLA 周围很多医院的医生,因为有UCLA 的住院医去轮转,医院的很多医生都挂名UCLA的临床教授职位,但是UCLA一分钱不付工资,挂名教授的需要定期通过UCLA学术职称考核晋升副教授或者教授。虽然不拿工资,但是可以享受UCLA提供给教工的一切资源,比如申请课题有学校的资源支持等。
