Before the change of admissions rules, black students accounted for 1% of TJ student body and Asian 73%. Was this because the number of rich Asians families were 73 times larger than that of rich black families? Obviously not, even though FCPS and their supporters wanted to frame it this way. We all know the true reason is that Asian students work much harder, even FCPS officials and their supporters had to admit it in their hearts although they would never dare to admit. Because this does not fit in their narrative and political agenda. Wealth disparity could matter in some other aspects of our society but is never the real reason in TJ's case. Many Asian parents who earn minimum wage working as waitresses or store clerks try to save up hundreds of dollars to send their kids to tutoring centers; And after realizing what kind of sacrifices their parents have been making, their kids work harder and score better. This is the real reason. These Asian families are no richer than poor black or Latino families. What truly matters is parents' vision, willingness to sacrifice, and self-motivation. Everyone should do the same if they want to get in TJ. These attributes should be promoted instead of being penalized. I support a public voucher program that enables every poor & self-motivated student to receive tutoring if they desire to, starting at middle school or even elementary school, so that everyone would have an equal opportunity to become academically prepared. And the admissions at TJ should be purely based on the test scores. This would help the truly motivated students constrained by their families' socio-econ status, including those poor Asian families. I also welcome other policies that promote social justice without hurting principles and standards. Abolishing the entrance test and loosening academic standards is a lazy shortcut and would ruin these bright young kinds and our country in the future. Same will identity politics.
5%。 AA helps African American is just an excuse for some races to get more. Asian parents in this district need to be more actively involved.
