Australia to resume flights from India FT reporters
Repatriation flights from India to Australia would resume on May 15, officials said, ending a ban imposed by Canberra over the south Asian country’s coronavirus surge.
Travellers would be flown to the Centre for National Resilience at Howard Springs, south-east of Darwin in the country’s remote Northern Territory.
“Since the pause on flights from India commenced there has been a sustained reduction in Covid-19-positive cases originating from India in Australia’s quarantine system,” the territorial government said in a statement. The number of positive cases in the Howard Springs centre has fallen to 21, from more than 50 cases a week ago.
“Positive cases associated with previous facilitated flights from India are on track to reach zero by May 14,” the statement added.
When Australia threatened to imprison citizens who breached a ban on returning from India during a severe coronavirus wave, it justified the measure by saying it wanted to keep the public safe. But the travel ban has sparked a backlash from civil rights advocates, with claims it is racist, illegal and cruel.
