Emma was initially treated at St. Rose Hospital, Siena Campus in Henderson, Nevada but was subsequently airlifted to Loma Linda Hospital ''''s (near San Bernardino, California) special neural treatment unit. Emma was put into an induced coma, ventilated and at least three brain surgeries have been done to repair blood clots. If you follow the national news, the J & J vaccine has been put on hold because of these rare cases. Unfortunately, Emma is the "one in a million" here. Russ & Kathy Burkey have been at Emma''''s side since this all began. Her older brother, Cooper, is holding down the household while they are all in southern California. We are doing a gofundme to help the family with the expenses of her treatment, airlift, and the 100 other things that happen when life is interrupted. There are hopeful signs appearing just lately. Here is Russ'''' statement from last night (Tuesday, April 13): "Her tracheostomy and abdominal feeding tube surgeries were a success. She seems more comfortable without the tube in her mouth. They took her off all her meds and ventilator for 40 minutes today and she breathed on her own but meds had to be restarted as her heart rate increased too much. Her sedation has been reduced. She is yawning and swallowing much easier. She is fighting against going to sleep. Please pray her heart rate would stay under 80, that she would allow herself to sleep, and that it would be safe for her sedation to be further reduced. Thank you for all your prayers." From Russ (on Friday night, April 16): She is very slowly improving... they moved her to a room that is not critical care but still in the ICU wing... an improvement but still one sick little girl. Her high heart rate is still an issue. Please pray that she can learn/remember to swallow... it is a small thing but pivotal to her recovery. Also, pray that she can remember/learn to blink... it is critical to help with communication and being able to rest. APRIL 16, 2021 by BRET JOHNSON, Organizer Russ wrote this last night (BIG NEWS!): "For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate." Luke 15:24 NIV SHE IS AWAKE! She answered multiple questions by sticking out her tongue when Kathy visited her this evening. She says she is not in much pain. She says she can feel when you touch her feet and hands. She has been sleeping peacefully and comfortably... in fact she fell asleep just before Kathy left her bedside. Kathy got 2 hours with her tonight. The meds are controlling her heart rate much better. Her in inability to swallow is both a short term and long term challenge to her recovery... but We are still much relieved! We thank so, so much for your prayers and praise and glorify the one and true living God, our Lord Jesus Christ for His answers to your prayers. Still pray for Emma... she has a long slough ahead of her and months of recovery. She has to learn to talk and walk and just about everything else. Thank all of you so much for the prayers you will continue to offer up.
