Email Template 1: Dear Senator XXXX I strongly oppose SB82 (Petty Theft) which is disastrous to our state. If the calamitous SB82 was passed, robbery without the use of deadly weapons or great bodily injury would be just considered as petty theft, virtually pardoning robbers. The legal definition of great bodily injury is narrow and specific. Thus, even if the victim suffers with a bloody nose, black eye bruises, etc., as long as the robber is without deadly weapon, this type of violent robbery will still be considered as nonviolent petty theft! This bill is more outrageous that it will retroactively vacate the sentence or resentence numerous convicted robbers before the passage of the bill. It will waste a huge sum of taxpayers’ money for this purpose when our state has a big budget crisis. According to Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, they need to keep the current stimulating policy until the end of 2023 since the U.S. economy will still not be in good shape for a couple more years. How can our state afford to spend such a huge sum of funds now on the convicted robbers of the past?! Does that mean other essential expenses for the safety and well being of the citizens and for the growth of the economy have to be curtailed? SB 82 is baneful and dangerous and must be rejected. Thank you. Sincere XXXX Actions: Please send email to members of the State Senate Appropriations Committee before 4/5 to urge them to vote against SB82.
