A former Harvard fencing coach is being charged with bribery after receiving more than $1.5 million in bribes from a Maryland businessman who wanted his two sons admitted into the prestigious university, federal authorities said. Peter Brand, 67, of Cambridge, and Jie “Jack” Zhao, 61, of Maryland, were charged by criminal complaint with conspiracy to commit federal programs bribery, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Officials say Brand got Zhao’s two sons into Harvard by recruiting them to join the men’s fencing team in exchange for money.
