Don''t know the answer but if you can get on board the outbound then of course it is doable. Please let us know. I might do the same. On the other hand if you put your folks in business class or first class and call for wheel chair service, then there might be any reason to escort.
That was not the reason. United crew members are required to stay over night in SHANGHAI if they originated from U.S. They are not allowed to work 30+ hrs straight like this. Fliers have no such restriction.
There are rules/union contracts on how many hours crew members can work. They are required to stay overnight in SHANGHAI if they originated from U.S. 13+ hrs ago. But for an individual, there is no such rule so as long as you can get on (and show then the turn around return ticket) then there should be no issue. Potential issue is what if your return is cancelled and you are strended in Shanghai then the outbound airline might be fined.
Already said above all passengers have to go through custom, no exceptions (unless you have high up clearance but you wouldn't be asking here if you do, obviously)

这就是我想问的问题啊. 我再四处问问, 有答案再更新这里。谢谢大家!

从规定本质看,这个应是标准答案!
