Pay Up! Tolls Are Going Up on New Jersey''s 3 Main Highways Sunday

What to Know
Tolls go up on New Jersey''s three major toll roads just after midnight Sunday.
Under the new toll schedule, tolls rise around 36% on the turnpike. Garden State Parkway tolls rise by 27%. Atlantic City Expressway tolls increase an average of 57 cents.

Now that the summer season has come to an end, it’s going to cost you more to go to the Jersey Shore and other spots using New Jersey’s major toll roads. Starting at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, tolls are going up on the Atlantic City Expressway, Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike.
Tolls would rise by 36% on the turnpike, meaning the average trip which now costs $3.50 would rise to $4.80, according to reporting from back in June when Gov. Phil Murphy allowed for the toll hikes to go into effect. Garden State Parkway tolls would rise by 27%, increasing the cost of an average trip by 30 cents. which now costs $1.11, the cash toll at a Garden State Parkway mainline toll plaza rises from $1.50 to $1.90.;Atlantic City Expressway tolls would increase 37%, increasing the cost of an average trip by 57 cents. The toll at the Egg Harbor toll plaza on the Expressway’s main line will go from $3 to $4.25.
A sign on the Garden State Parkway at the Union toll plaza has the new $1.90 toll rate covered up on Friday until it takes effect Sunday morning.
Opponents took one more shot at the two toll authorities, reiterating that raising tolls and holding public hearings during a statewide COVID-19 pandemic was a tone deaf move.
“Drivers are getting a double hit because the 9 cent increase in the gas tax is coming,” said Jeff Tittel, NJ Sierra Club director.
This is bad time for a toll increase because of COIVID_19 related traffic declines and the effect on toll revenues and high unemployment rates in the state, Tittel said.
Traffic on the Atlantic City Expressway was down 16% in July when compared with July 2019. Turnpike traffic was down 29% in July, but commercial traffic actually increased 1% when compared to July 2019. Parkway traffic declined 24% in July compared to the same month last year.
“This is the wrong toll hike at the wrong time for the wrong projects,” Tittel said. “This is a time of financial uncertainty."
Toll authority officials took the opposite stance, that the $24 billion Turnpike Authority and $500 million Atlantic City Expressway capital plans will help the state’s post-pandemic economic recovery.
