美国劳动市场持续复苏，8月失业率大幅下降至8.4%，新增就业人口137万。美国总统特朗普发推文称赞“超棒的就业数字”，副总统彭斯表示“美国的回归已经开始”。
美国劳工部周五发布的8月非农就业报告显示，当月新增就业人口137万，失业率降至8.4%，好于市场预期。失业率从7月的10.2%降至8.4%，低于4月新冠病毒疫情严重、经济因防疫大规模停摆时的14.7%。
但疫情威胁犹存，近几个月就业复苏动能减弱，全美仍有超过1000万因疫情丢掉工作的人在找工作。
随着美国各州重启经济，商家恢复营业后找回放无薪假的员工，美国失业率4月以来首度降至10%以下，但仍高于2月疫情爆发前追平半世纪低点的3.5%。 全美3、4月流失2220万就业人口，近4个月仅约半数短暂失业者回到工作岗位，8月非农业就业人口比2月低了1150万人。
据劳工部数据，8月政府雇员激增34.4万人，占单月就业增长1/4，此外，零售、商业服务、餐旅、教育与医疗服务领域就业也有显著增长。

不过，美国就业复苏进展并不顺利，加州、德州、佛罗里达、亚利桑那等州夏季疫情复燃，许多商家被迫再次停业，打乱复原步调。
劳工部3日公布，截至8月29日，全美88.1万人初次申请失业给付。这项数据近几个月逐步下滑，但仍高于疫情爆发前的历史高点69.5万人。
由于疫情未解，业者即使恢复营业仍面临需求疲弱的困境，需要的人手受限，许多厂商人事冻结或开始为景气长期低迷而缩减。联合航空控股公司2日宣布拟裁员1万6370人，应对疫情期间乘客搭机需求低迷的局面。可口可乐公司也宣布计划裁员，并向美国与加拿大约4000名员工提出优离方案。
