Dear Mr.xxxx,
My name is xxx and my son xxx is a xth grader atyour school. I am writing this email to respectfully and strongly urge you toconsider closing the school next Monday until the COVID-19 endemic ends in ourstate.
Please allow me to provide you a bit of my background sothat you would understand that my opinion on COVID-19 is scientifically soundand based on facts and data. I have a Ph.D. in xxx.Although I am not a virologist nor an epidemiologist, my field of study ishighly related to the two and my knowledge and expertise are more than adequatefor me to discuss COVID-19 and public health-related topics.
I have been attentively following the COVID-19 pandemic fromthe very beginning since last December when it first emerged in Wuhan, China.Once COVID-19 was identified as a novel corona virus, I suggested doctors inWuhan hospitals treat COVID-19 patients with anti-viral medicines normally usedto treat HIV patients via social media. Later, Kaletra, an anti-HIV drug waswidely used to treat COVID-19 patients in China.
COVID-19 is a virus that has almost perfect features tocause a pandemic: 1). it's a new virus that human has no immunity to, thereforeeveryone is susceptible; 2). it's highly transmissive through droplets sent tothe environment by a person's cough, sneeze or even breath; 3). it's stealthy:one can infect many before developing any symptoms; 4). it causes very severepneumonia that is fatal to many. Case fatality rate (CRF) can go as high as 7%if an outbreak occurs and hospitals are overwhelmed, like in Italy. 5). oncecommunity transmission happens, the number of infected doubles every 4-6 daysbased on data from other countries. Such exponential growth is not noticeablein the beginning and will be too late when detected. The explosive growth ofpatients will rapidly saturate the health care system in any country. We haveseen this pattern playing out multiple times.
As of today, there are x confirmed cases in xxxx andthey are scattered in every county. Due to the lack of testing capability inthe US, we don't know the extent of the COVID-19 endemic in xxxxx, exactlyhow many are actually infected nor who are infected. Since it has an average 5days incubation time and two weeks to progress into severe cases, spreading ofCOIVD-19 in the early phase of an endemic is silent and stealthy. Therefore, we are now in the most dangerousphase of stealthy spreading in the community.
Currently, there is no specific treatment nor vaccine forCOVID-19. The only effective measures are non-pharmaceutical interventions suchas social distancing. And the only way to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 is tobe proactive. We need to act NOW and FAST to stay ahead of the curve of viralspreading. Being reactive means defeat and failure that will be paid with manylives.
Fortunately, COVID-19 seems to spare our youngsters, kidsseldom develop severe symptoms. It's a huge relief for parents. However, schools are perfect ground for COVID-19 to breed and spread. Our students cancome home and bring the virus with them and infect their loved ones, parents, grandparents. I am especially worried about anyone above 40 years old, the fatalityrate increases dramatically as age increases. Even among younger patients, thereaction to this virus is highly unpredictable: some barely have any symptomsand some get very sick and die from it.
Since my extended families live in China, I watched Chinesenews every single day and witnessed how rapidly the situation progressed frominitial confusion to chaos to total hell. The wailing of a girl chasing a vanfrom a morgue carrying her mom away at night in Wuhan was hauntingly sad andheartbreaking. The devastation COVID-19 brought to many families is staggering.I truly wish this won't happen here.
To summarize, I have seen how devastating and dangerousCOVID-19 is and we need to close our school immediately. Every single day wedon't enforce strict measures, the endemic grows significantly larger and morelives would be lost in the end. Therefore, I plead for you to close our schoolnext Monday before it's too late.
Sincerely,
xxx

写的挺好,提点小意见: 太长了。 现在学校的校长一天可能收上百封家长email。这么长的信未必看完。直接说我有concern, 希望学校close 就好了。

哈哈,校长忙死了,哪有时间读这么长。不要超过一段话。就写 deeply concern about the virus spread, request school shut down or extend spring break!!!
