2 min agoUniversity of Nebraska medical director: The trial for a treatment drug "shows great promise"
Joining us at the town hall is Dr. Mark Rupp, Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). UNMC is currently running a clinical trial of an experimental coronavirus treatment, and have a second participant enrolled in the trial. The trial is sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "We're very pleased with the fact that we brought this trial on extremely quickly along with our colleagues at the NIH," said Rupp.
"It shows great promise. This was a drug that was developed and tested initially against Ebola virus. It was found to not be very effective against Ebola but did seem to work against some of these coronaviruses like SARS and MERS. So it really does seem to show some promise now with the treatment of Covid-19. So we're very hopeful, but it's way too early to say anything."
He urged the public not to panic: "I do agree we need to take a collective deep breath and realize this is not some existential threat against mankind. A quarter to a third of us are not going to die in the next year, like in Europe in the Middle Ages," Rupp said. But we should still be cautious: "This is a very serious event and one that we need to take seriously and prepare for and do everything we can to blunt the spread of this pandemic," he added, warning that a worst case scenario could lead to "Millions of potential infections, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths."
5 min agoThe US isn't ready for a massive outbreak, experts warn CNN's town hall is now turning to the question of what an epidemic would look like in the United States. A moderate scenario might be a million hospitalizations — meaning 200,000 people would need to be in the intensive care unit, and 64,000 people would need breathing machines, said CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta. The question: "We don't have all that. We have maybe just barely that. And many of those ventilators and breathing machines are currently being used. What are we going to do if that many people actually need care like that?" Gupta said. The answer: "It's one area where the response has been laggard," responded Ron Klein, President Barack Obama's Ebola response coordinator. "Getting our health care system ready for the influx of cases is something we should be doing now. We saw in China they built temporary hospitals. They really flexed up their capacity," he said. Klein went on to make this crucial point:
"It's not just the people who get coronavirus are going to be affected by this. If hospital emergency rooms are overwhelmed, if doctors and nurses treating those people get sick and staffing drops at our hospitals, if we don't have enough beds, people with other illnesses won't be able to get into the hospital and get treatment. People with routine medical conditions won't be able to get treatment. The possible impact on our health care system is something we should be using this time, as cases ramp up, to get ready for."

The Red Cross in Lombardy has thousands of volunteers working in the health system, he said. In addition to the two volunteers who have tested positive, “140 are considered ‘at risk’ of having contracted the virus, most of whom are in the ‘red zone’ and had contact with coronavirus patients in the first couple of days of the crisis,” Giudici said. They’ve been tested, or are waiting for the test, the official added. “We have an increase of patients with coronavirus, but at this moment the health system is able to control and manage the situation… We have enough doctors, nurses and volunteers to manage patients and control the situation,” Giudici said.
Patients in 18 states have tested positive or are presumptively positive for the spreading coronavirus as public health officials race to get ahead of the growing worldwide epidemic. Officials in Nevada, New Jersey, Tennessee and Texas said they had identified new cases in the last 24 hours, adding to an outbreak that has infected at least 162 people nationwide. There are worrying signs that the number of cases is poised to grow. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) declared a state of emergency Wednesday after a patient near Sacramento became the 11th American to die. A cruise ship returning from Hawaii, linked to the death in Sacramento, is being held off the coast of California after nearly two dozen passengers and crew members showed symptoms. Two new cases were reported in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s (D) office said Thursday. Los Angeles County reported six new cases, and Santa Clara County reported three of its own. In Seattle, the region hardest hit by the virus so far, officials closed a public school district that serves 20,000 children. The Northshore School District will be closed for up to two weeks, local officials said. While the Trump administration has focused on containing the virus, local health departments are shifting their focus to mitigation, an acknowledgement that the virus is beyond containment and is already spreading through communities. “The goal is to slow down the spread and have it happen over a larger period of time so that hospitals aren’t overwhelmed and supply chains can keep up,” John Wiesman, Washington state’s secretary of Health, told The Hill in an interview last week. “It’s important for the public to understand what that goal is so that they’re not confused and say, 'Hey this isn’t working.'” The new cases come as the Trump administration struggles to deliver a coherent response to the viral outbreak. Vice President Pence is headed to Seattle to meet Gov. Jay Inslee (D). Earlier this week, the administration has pledged to make a million coronavirus tests available by the end of the week, a goal that administration officials acknowledged Thursday would not happen. Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said the federal government would have shipped enough tests to cover 75,000 people by the end of the week. Public heath experts said they were growing concerned that the administration’s messaging does not meet the reality, that the virus is likely to spread widely in the United States. “I hear a lot of wishful thinking and a little bit of a scattershot approach,” said Prabhjot Singh, director of the Arnhold Institute for Global Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. “What we’re not hearing, which we probably need to hear more clearly, is that most people are going to be exposed to the coronavirus, and we need to be ready to comfort and care for those people.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that it would loosen testing criteria, making tests available to anyone who wanted to be tested. But even if a million tests were available, public health experts say the United States lacks the capacity to process those tests in laboratories. “We acknowledge this is a time of angst and concern and uncertainty for many people,” Azar told reporters. Speaking on Sean Hannity’s show on Fox News on Wednesday, President Trump questioned the World Health Organization’s (WHO) official projection that the virus kills 3.4 percent of those who contract it. “I think the 3.4 percent is really a false number, and this is just my hunch, but based on a lot of conversations with a lot of people that do this because a lot of people will have this and it’s very mild. They’ll get better very rapidly, they don’t even see a doctor, they don’t even call a doctor. You never hear about these people,” Trump said. Speaking on Capitol Hill on Thursday, Assistant Secretary of Health Brett Giroir said data suggests the actual mortality rate is in fact lower than the WHO’s estimates. “The best estimates now of the overall mortality rate for COVID-19 is somewhere between 0.1 percent and 1 percent. That’s lower than you’ve heard probably in many reports,” Giroir said. “This is likely more severe in its mortality rate than a typical flu season, but it’s certainly within the range. So we don’t want people to go crazy.” Later in the interview with Hannity, Trump seemed to suggest those who have the virus could even continue going to work, something health officials strongly advise against. “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better,” Trump said. The likelihood of a broader spread was evident Thursday as four new states reported initial cases. Texas health officials said a man in his 70s is in quarantine in Fort Bend County, outside of Houston. In Nevada, a patient identified through a Las Vegas-area Veterans Administration hospital became that state’s first preemptive positive case. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) said a 44-year old man who had recently traveled out of state was being quarantined at home. And in New Jersey, a 32-year old man in Bergen County was diagnosed. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said during an appearance on Capitol Hill that the risk to the general public remains low, though it is higher in some areas. “The risk in the United States as a whole is still low,” Fauci said. “The risk of getting infected when you have community spread in a certain area is a bit higher.”

"With this declaration, I am officially authorizing and directing the Maryland Department of Health and the Maryland Emergency Management Agency to ramp up coordination among all state and local agencies and enable them to fast-track coordination with our state and local health departments and emergency management teams." Three positive cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in Montgomery County on Thursday. The county is Maryland's most populous, and borders Washington, DC. The patients, who contracted the virus while traveling overseas, are in good condition and are in quarantine at their homes, the state government said. "While today’s news may seem overwhelming, this is not a reason to panic," Hogan said. "Marylanders should go to work or go to school tomorrow just as they normally would. At the same time, I want to continue to remind everyone to prepare themselves and continue to stay informed. I am confident in our state’s ability to respond effectively to these three cases of coronavirus as well as to any future cases, and to be a national leader in responding to this situation and in developing treatments and perhaps even a vaccine."

Today's update from CDC includes 46 people who were aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, three people repatriated from China and 100 US cases. Across the country: US cases are those detected and tested in the United States through US public health systems since January 21. Among the 100 US cases, there have been 10 deaths, according to CDC’s count. The 100 US cases are in 13 states, according to CDC: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington and Wisconsin.

我每天早上上班路上听Bloomberg News, 一个星期以前主持人和嘉宾的tone都是很轻松的, 半开玩笑的说, how can we get Xi to accept international help...
Show me your chinglish or f off.
