Dear XXX Families, I know that many of you are concerned about the recent news regarding the Coronavirus and its possible impact if it reaches New York City. While we can't control whether or not the virus spreads to NYC, we are trying to remind our students about basic healthy practices they should be mindful of to prevent the spread of germs within the classroom community. On a school level, we are working to insure that common surfaces in classrooms and bathrooms are disinfected. One of the most important ways we can support our students is reminding them of proper hand-washing. This is the best way to prevent the spread of germs. This is a link to a hand washing poster we use with our students at school that you can use to reinforce this at home. Some of you have inquired about school closings. Decisions about closing schools is something that will be directed from the Department of Education, as it affects the larger school system across New York City. As I receive information from the DOE or Office of School Health, I will forward that information to you as well. In the meantime, it's important to make sure our students feel comfortable and filter news for them about the virus. It is important that as we address this outbreak, we separate facts from fear, and guard against stigma and discrimination. There are a lot of things on social media and in the news that are at best not rooted in science. We need to encourage everyone to keep their attention on the facts and support our XXX community. Everyone should continue to practice prevention measures including covering your cough, washing your hands often and staying home from school when you are sick.
February 27, 2020 Dear XXXX School Community: The recent news involving the Novel Coronavirus is creating concern across the globe, and our school district is closely monitoring all facets of the emerging situation very carefully. This morning, members of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents and I met with Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein, the Commissioner of Health for the Nassau County Department of Health. As of this writing, there are no confirmed cases of Novel Coronavirus in New York State and 15 confirmed cases in the United States, excluding those individuals returning from a cruise. According to Dr. Eisenstein, six people in Nassau County tested negative for Novel Coronavirus, and there are currently 78 asymptomatic individuals who recently traveled to China being monitored daily (for a period of up to 14 days) by the DOH. The DOH will determine if any student returning from China needs to be monitored. The District will receive such notification directly from the DOH. Furthermore, the DOH will notify the District when a child can return to school. We will work closely with the DOH to follow these guidelines. I want to take a moment to update you on some of the precautions and actions we have taken and will be taking within our schools: * Our custodial staff has been cleaning frequently touched surfaces (doorknobs, computer keyboards, handrails, etc.) throughout the day. * We utilize large disinfecting machines that are used to clean classrooms and large spaces. * Additional hand sanitizers have been installed in each of our schools. * Students and staff are encouraged to wash their hands throughout the day with greater frequency. * Our school nurses are available to answer any health-related questions. Additionally, I’d like to remind our community about the simple steps we can all take to help stop the spread of this and other respiratory viruses: * Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, preferably with 60-95% alcohol. * Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. * Avoid close contact with people who are sick. * Stay home when you are sick. * Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. * Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. If you have specific questions about your child's health, please be sure to communicate with your child's physician. Students who show any evidence of not feeling well should remain at home and students who are ill must be fever-free for at least 24 hours (without using a fever-reducing medicine) before returning to school. As always, your child's school nurse and/or principal remain a resource to you and your family regarding this issue. We remain in close communication with and will continue to follow the guidance from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), New York State Education Department (NYSED), and the Nassau County Department of Health (DOH). In the event of a health emergency, any decisions regarding a school closing would come at the direction of the local Departments of Health and various state governmental agencies, with input from the NYSED. While we have not received guidance from NYSED regarding this matter, the District is looking into plans to ensure some continuity of instruction in the unlikely event that we are forced to close school. The latest information about the Novel Coronavirus and preventative measures can be found on the websites for the following organizations and agencies: NYS Department of Health, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Nassau County Health Department, and New York State Education Department (NYSED). Additionally, the NYS Department of Health has established a hotline to answer questions about the Novel Coronavirus at 1-888-364-3065. As always, the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff remain the District's primary concern. Rest assured that we will continue to follow the directions we receive from State and local authorities regarding the Novel Coronavirus, and will take the precautionary measures outlined above for the safety of our school community. I will continue to keep you updated on any information as I receive it. Thank you all for your cooperation. Sincerely, Superintendent of Schools

exactly。
