Facts About Coronavirus: Should You Be Worried?? 😬 Lately, there has been a media frenzy over the new coronavirus! It has been all over the news, social media, and the catastrophizers are going wild! I have had many patients and friends reach out to me wondering how they can protect their families and themselves, and I’ve been asked multiple times should we be afraid? What is a Coronavirus? First of all, there are many coronaviruses out there which I guarantee you have already been exposed to in your lifetime. It is a respiratory virus that causes the “common cold”🤧 with stuffy nose, headache, fever, swollen throat, and coughing. Coronaviruses cause a significant amount of ALL colds adults and children get in the winter/spring seasons. They are called “corona” meaning crown👑 because the virus looks like it has a little crown or halo around it. (Take a peek at the picture 😉) Coronaviruses have been around and evolving since 8100 BC and could be considerably older than that. Yes, even our ancient ancestors suffered from common colds! These viruses are commonly hosted and spread by bats🦇 or birds🐦. The easiest way to get this virus is through poor hygiene by not washing your hands or living in very congested urban areas.🏙 Coronavirus is NOT deadly to the average healthy person. The problem is it can lead to dehydration and pneumonia. This makes it potentially dangerous to: the elderly👵🏼, young children👶🏻, and people with compromised immune systems😷. Especially if they do not have good access to health care.🏨 The Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) aka: Wuhan Coronavirus that has been all over the news lately is a new strain which makes for a great story and media hype. It also makes a good meme or joke since the name of the virus sounds like an illness that has to do with a cold beer.🍺 However, if you’ve been watching too much Walking Dead or are scared because the media makes it seem like the apocalypse or next plague is at our front door, you do NOT need to be overly alarmed! ☠ Wuhan Coronavirus is actually quite similar to the common flu. You get a cough, congestion, fever, sore throat, and headache. 🤒These symptoms can range from mild to severe. The problem is it can lead to pneumonia in some cases (just like the flu) which is the most common cause of death. An average healthy person can fight off coronaviruses and flu viruses with no or little medical intervention.💪🏼 Thankfully, in the USA we have good access to healthcare and tend to have better health hygiene. 🇺🇸 In contrast to Wuhan Coronavirus, the flu has killed 8,200 people in the US alone so far this flu season. 🤯This flu death rate is down from about 13,000 Americans killed last year. Yet you never hear the media freaking out about the flu because when average healthy people get it, yeah you feel like crap for a few days, but then your immune system kicks it and you are fine. The majority of the people who die are elderly, have other diseases, and the virus puts them over the edge. In comparison, Wuhan Coronavirus has killed 213 people at this point, none of which have been Americans. From the CDC: “For the general American public…The immediate health risk from 2019-nCoV is considered low.” ⬇️ According to the WHO as of January 29, 2020: The Death rate for Wuhan Coronavirus is at only 2%. That being said, if you are elderly, have young children, or are immune compromised you want to do your best to protect yourself from viruses. ◼◾So What can you do to protect yourself from not only Coronavirus but all viruses this season?◾◼ 1. Wash your hands! Wash your hands! Wash your hands! For at least 20 seconds with Soap👏 2. Do NOT grab handles on doors with your bare hands use your sleeve or a coat, or a tissue. 3. Sneeze or cough into your sleeve or shirt 4. Support your immune system against viruses 5. Avoid touching eyes, nose, mouth and unwashed hands. Avoid clise contact with people who are sick. 🔷️🔹️How do I support my immune system to fight off viruses?🔹️🔷️ Antibiotics do NOT work against viruses. You need to give your body the micronutrients that help your immune system fight off or protect you against viruses. We have immune support packages available here at Zimmer Chiropractic & Nutrition. But there are several herbs, vitamins, and minerals that really help to fight viruses including: 1. 🌏VitaminsD3 with K2 🌏- your immune cells use it to function, and it is anti-viral. Vitamin D3 deficiency is correlated with increased risk of catching influenza and other respiratory infections. 2. 🌏Vitamin A🌏- your immune cells use it to function, but it is a major factor in keeping your mucous membranes healthy. Without vitamin A your eyes, nose, and throat, are much more susceptible to being infected with viruses. 3. 🌏Zinc🌎- this mineral stops viruses from being able to replicate and infect more of your cells. This allows your immune system to have a chance to kill the virus without it constantly infecting new cells and propagating. Take this on a full stomach. Otherwise you may 💩 or 🤮. 4. 🌍Echinacea, Elderberry, Astragalus, Andrographis🌍- just a few herbs that help to prime the immune system to attack viral infections. 5.🌏 Colloidal Silver🌏 This is anti bacterial, anti fungal and anit viral. Kills everything. 6. 🌏Aresenicum Album 30 C 🌏Homeopathic remedy. It jas been recommended by the Scientific Advisory Board of the Central Counsil for Research in Homeopathy under the Ministry of AYUSH. Wow! That was a mouthful. Lol Take on am empty stomach daily for 3 days. Then repeat once a month. I hope this gives everyone some peace of mind. Know that in the unlikely scenario that you do get the Wuhan Coronavirus you will most likely feel like junk for a week and bounce right back. Coronaviruses have been around for thousands of years and they will probably be around for a long time to come. -Dr. Valerie Ripperger Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine
