I've been a long term customer of Chaves and I'll never hire them again. Historically they did me right in every way. Their quality of work was awesome and their pricing was fair. I know everyone has to make their money and I'm fine with that. What I'm not fine with is getting ripped off. Specifically, I'm not fine with being quoted $1700.00 for a repair when all I really needed was an $80.00 part.
So here's the story...
This past summer we had one week in particular that was unusually hot. During that time one of our air handlers had a failure (the circuit board cooked). I called Chaves and they sent a technician out to look at the unit.
When the technician came out he was polite and quickly told me that I needed a new board and a new coil. The reason why he said I needed a new coil was because the water wasn't draining properly and it had leaked all over the board. When I asked him how much I'd be looking at in parts he didn't give me a number.
Later I had a friend come over who also does HVAC repairs. He looked at the unit and realized that the coil wasn't reinstalled properly from when Chaves installed the new air handler. This installation issue meant that rather than the water draining down the gutters like it was supposed to, it pooled and ran down the inside of the unit. He checked the coil and confirmed that it was still in perfect working order. He also topped off the coolant for me. Then he told me he'd get back to me on the cost of the board.
A few days later is when I received an email from Chaves quoting me $1700.00 to fix my unit. The quote apparently included a new coil and a new board. The total estimated time for fixing my unit was 1 full day. When I saw that I wanted to understand how that quote broke down. I sent between four and six emails arguing with Chaves asking for an itemized quote showing parts and labor. Instead of providing it they danced around the subject and refused to give me the breakdown.
Later my friend emailed me with the cost of the board, $80.00 new. I asked him to come by and install the board for me. I told him I'd pay him for his work just as if he were servicing someone else.
He came, he installed the board and tested the unit. The unit was operational again and working better than ever given that he also topped it off. The total repair time was less than two hours. He wanted to charge me 200 bucks for the repair but I paid him $350.00 because he saved me so much trouble.
So, Chaves quoted me $1700.00 for a repair that included a new coil that I didn't need and a board that cost $80.00. They told me it would take a day to do the repair when in reality it tool less than 2 hours. They did this and I was a long term customer! How long term? This is my third property and I've used them to install new systems in all 3. Those systems include a heat exchanger, four air handlers, four compressors, a boiler, three furnaces, and two clean air effects units.
After doing that much business with them to be treated this way cost them my loyalty. If I was dealing direct with Manny I don't think this would have happened. But, I wasn't and the people I was dealing with didn't seem to care.
it is all market price.

GOOD WILL CEO.
