According to the Death Penalty Information Center, 41% of death row defendants are Black, while 42% are White. However, a review of 82 studies found that the race of the victim can influence the likelihood of being charged with capital murder or receiving the death penalty. In fact, those who murdered white people were found to be more likely to be sentenced to death than those who murdered Black people. 美国俄亥俄州32岁女子艾莉丝（Bionca Ellis）被指控在克里夫兰郊外北奥姆斯特德（North Olmsted）一家超市前随机刺杀了3岁男童朱利安（Julian Wood），男童的母亲玛戈（Margot Wood）也受伤。然而，艾莉丝杀人后却在法庭上不断露出挑衅的讪笑表情，引发众怒。法官10日已表示，最重可判她死刑。

男童的父亲伍德（Jared Wood）接着站上法庭，他情绪激动地表示，艾莉丝夺走了他们的一切，“没有什么能够取代我的儿子。请尽您所能地把这个怪物关进监牢。”
法官当天最终将艾莉丝的保释金定在最高的500万美元，并将她继续关押回看守所。报导补充，艾莉丝在案发当天下午3点左右被捕时，手里还拿着一把凶刀，由于她与伍德一家人先前并不认识，案件震惊了当地社区的民众。
