Yes, the JR pass could be worth it if… You are on a short trip (~7-10 days) and want to move as fast as possible. You are travelling long distances and/or many destinations. For example, Tokyo, Osaka/Kyoto, and Hiroshima are all spread apart, so a JR pass could save both money and time, especially if you also need a return trip (e.g. for your return flight home). Buses on these routes are still cheaper, but much slower. You aren't on a backpacker's budget (since buses are almost always cheaper, and overnight buses save on accommodation).
In these cases, the JR pass might be the best solution for you. You'll need to purchase ahead of time, and the website with some of the best prices is Klook. They'll have your pass mailed to you with worldwide within 10 days.
The JR pass might not be worth it if…
You are backpacking or have a lot of time in Japan (10+ days), as the JR pass must be used on consecutive days. You can choose any 3 to 7 individual days within 2 whole months with a Willer Express bus pass, or just buy individual tickets at Kosokubus.com. Your main areas of travel include only Tokyo, Fuji, and/or Osaka/Kyoto/Nara. Regional passes like the Kansai Thru Pass (Osaka/Kyoto/Nara) and the Mt. Fuji Pass give transit access as well as discounts on attractions at a much better value.
If you have time to see Japan more thoroughly, we find it cheaper to alternate between buying bus and train tickets as we go (including JR lines), and/or using regional passes (especially the Kansai Thru Pass for the most popular areas around Osaka and Kyoto). The pay-as-you-go approach seems the best way to stretch travel dollars and explore at a reasonable pace!
我们打算落地东京(主要是从温哥华去东京的机票便宜,飞去北海道就要贵好几百),北上去北海道,再折回南部的京都大阪,最后从福冈坐船去韩国。JR pass应该可以覆盖所有的火车行车路线吧?不知道21天来不来得及完成这些旅行,如果不行,延长到一个月也可以。那就要选择在哪些天激活JR pass了。
我看到楼下大王的帖子里,goingplace说去北海道太费时间,最好坐飞机,谢谢建议哈。我们时间相对自由一些,而且去那里要经过一个很长很长的隧道,小朋友们肯定会喜欢,就当隧道一日游了。
另外,想请教有经验的朋友们,JR通票,普通舱和绿色舱有很大区别吗?我看到21天的通票里,绿色舱只比普通仓贵100加币,如果全程有更好的体验,我会考虑买绿色舱。

北海道最好查一下。15年前买过7天的普通座、不错。不知green 是不是像brad Pitt 电影bullet train 一样

绿色车厢应该是同一趟列车,只是不同车厢。我刚才又翻看了一下,发现绿色车厢都需要提前预定座位,不然没法上,也是有点麻烦。除非它的用户体验特别棒,不然,多一事不如少一事。不过,我有大把时间来犹豫,九十月份才去呢。
温泉呢?Changjia,如果你去过哪个特别棒的温泉,请赐教。

不差钱的可以买绿色车厢,自由席的票,带大行李的也需要预约座位。
你有的是时间,可以一路玩过去,大阪,名古屋,东京,仙台,秋田,青森,札幌。
21天的JR pass 够了。JR pass 真是给外国人的红利, 一定要利用。

JR East 出的那个南北海道 在十四天内用六天那个 可以 cover 東京近郊 但不能用来去大坂。

我们很多年前用过十四天涵蓋全國的 JR Pass, 把九州也去了。日本四个大島就只有最小那个四國没有去,因为实在不夠时间了。
2023 的价格好像没有上多少。加元对日元有没有升值也是一个考慮。美元曾经是 1 to 150+ 現在巳经下來到 below 130 了。但是如果联储继续加息两三次 估计可以维持在 125 上下,还是比 2019 时多了 25 元 那时好像是 100 上下的。美国人用这个比以前平了 20% 哈。

日本内陸航空很久以前比较貴 近年来很平宜。 2019 时我们從大坂的 Itame 國内綫机场飞冲繩島 日航的飞机只要一万日元。还有另一家在飞,也是差不多价钱。 從关西机场走还平一点点。
订一个粗略的行程安排,用这个做基础然后 去 JR 网上查清楚各种选择的 价格明细,和 東京扎幌的机票 (这个有季节性)在纸上認真做个计算比较后才決定怎樣进行你的计划比较好。

你们说的网站,我都保存下来了,说的攻略,我也大致记住了。还是要先把自己想去的地方写下来,然后再研究路线,再根据路线选择购买哪一种套票。昨天看JRpass, 把USD的价格看成CAD了,感觉还好,今天发现自己的错误,再一折算,立刻就觉得比心理预期贵了些。不过,如果我们在日本二十来天,没事拉着孩子们上小火车上去溜达一圈,成本价肯定能坐出来,还是一个很好的选择,就像楼上betadine说的,JR pass是对外国人的福利,得抓住。
我目前还处在大致看世界地图的阶段,知道我们想去的几个国家/地区,但没具体到要游什么。目前,唯一订下的行程,是开着我们的破车出发,往北美西南方向走,游无数个国家公园,经过加利福尼亚州,然后北上拜访婆婆,在BC报废我们的小破车。这一个多月的行程,是具体到每天,一路营地/酒店也都定下来了。至于BC之后,刚刚开了个头,以后会多多请教大家。

只要是JR旗下的都能用不只是新干线,bus, 电车,渡船都可以坐。
不喜欢过飞机的安检,还要提早到机场,机场到市区又是一笔交通费。

东京大阪肯定去,有时去广岛和九州。
那些regional pass 才是坑,附带优惠入场卷没有也罢,大阪的海洋馆很旧的。
JR 电车站就在京都打卡点“稲荷神社“ 门口,坐local 电车,不仅慢,下车还要走一段路
广岛附近厳島神社(宮島)、JR直达,然后坐ferry 上岛,岛上也有鹿,比奈良好玩多了。
因为有JR pass,可以涨潮时去一次,退潮时再去一次,风景各不相同。
所以我是推荐J R pass的,
如果你住在美国那就更好了,加拿大就会贵很多。
我3月底去日本看樱花,买了14天的J R pass, 516 加元。
日元是47,250Yen. 我算了下自己的行程,如果不买JR pass,,实际会有87,060 Yen的支出。
所以JR是首选。
