If you know "how" to respond to it, either you are already enlightened too, or it is only a question about logic. If it is only a question about logic, then anyone knowledgeable and smart enough can answer it, and has nothing to do with enlightenment.
But most importantly, the response is supposed to be spontaneous, open, and only valid to the situation at the presenting moment. There is no after answer.
这个公案来自《五灯会元》卷六“亡名道婆”条,原文是:
昔有婆子供养一庵主,经二十年,常令一二八女子送饭给侍。一日,令女子抱定,曰:“正恁么时如何?”主曰:“枯木倚寒岩,三冬无暖气。”女子举似婆。婆曰:“我二十年只养了一个俗汉!”遂遣出,烧却庵。
那么问题来了,婆子为什么要烧庵?
和尚该怎么回答呢?
因为她发现供养了个普通和尚,不值得。
为啥她觉得是个普通僧人?
因为这位庵主落入了断灭。或者说,着了非法相。
了悟之士,没有法相,也没有非法相。
着了非法相,当然就不够通达。
如果我是禪師就說:施主好温暖,像个美麗的暖水袋,天冷時可再來。
1. 婆子供和尚吃喝行住二十年,经常派一个十六七岁的女孩子伺候他,(不知二十年来换了多少个女孩?)必是大富之家,且家中无男人主事。先派妙龄少女去勾引,成功后可借机要挟。未果,老羞成怒,遂遣出,烧却庵。
2. 婆子供和尚吃喝行住,并派一个十六七岁的女孩子伺候他,二十年后,夫妻已成事实,但和尚不承认。婆子怒,遂遣出,烧却庵,省得纳过闷儿来回庙住着,生个小和尚。
虽然勤修苦行是必须的,必要而非充分条件。
枯木倚寒岩 - 枯木是能倚,寒岩是所倚,能所具足,最基本的色蕴还未破,当然是俗人了。
枯木倚寒岩,三冬无暖气 - 寒岩是我相,枯木是人相,有倚有枯有寒无暖是众生相,三冬是寿者相。四相具足,还是俗人。
既然又是寒,又是无暖,那就烧了庵来点暖意吧:)
纯属猜测,大概老婆婆对他早已了如指掌,那个时候那样做只是提供一个适合他开悟的契机。估计么说啥都没用,当然不同的说法,老婆婆可能做法会有所不同。
怎么回答,婆子都会把庵烧掉的。
当然,这只是我个人的猜测。
之前和尚需要静修,婆子提供饮食住所。当和尚的功夫已经到了可以出去参访,而继续留下已无益的时候,婆子还提供一个契机让他可以以后继续参。烧掉庵是帮助和尚断了之前自以为得到的东西,使其心能沉下来继续精进。
全是个人猜测。
最低标准:不能变成花和尚,也不能变成死和尚。
