I don't do much ladder throwing at the fire house but I certainly do more house work than you do...
Doing physical work such as fixing up houses does give you decent amount of exercises, but is not sufficient to prevent age related deterioration. You still need regular workout on cardio and muscle to be able to maintain at desirable levels.
I think the key is the intensity. 1 day of low intensity phsical work does not have the same effect of a 1/2 hour cardio, and certainly even less effective at maintaining muscle strength.
But at least doing physical work regularly gives you regular exercises on complicated brain-muscle coordinations for various non-repeating tasks, that today's typical office worker lacks. For me, the house fixing works keep me not too far behind so that when I started regimented workout a couple of month ago I was able to quickly regain my abilities on measurable fitness performances.
4月底完成了大铁比赛。下一个比赛是12月的全马。五月到7月中间有一段时间的空闲,可以做点别的事情。5月中旬学校放假以后,我做了不少家务。 有一些事情是技术活,对体力上没有什么挑战。比如装个饮用水过滤器,修理门铃,修理电源插座,帮女儿家装个家俱什么的。但有一些事情还是体力上的挑战。几年没有维护,我家后院,阳台,房檐四周的木头,和车库门上的漆都有一些脱落了。Driveway地上也有点儿脏了,这个用power wash很快就洗干净了。
顺便把两个车子也洗了一遍。车库门和后院,阳台的木头刷漆都比较简单。刷完以后确实好看多了。
最费劲的是房檐上的木头刷漆,需要架长梯子上去。
我家这个梯子收起来的长度是20尺十寸。重量有50多磅,很结实,但用起来也很费劲。二十多年前买的,那时候我才30出头,用这个梯子的时候就觉得挺费劲。当时就想等年纪大了,这梯子肯定搬不动了。二十多年过去了,肌肉肯定有一些萎缩,但是这个梯子好像勉强还能扛得动。九十几度的高温下,太阳晒得梯子都烫手。刷一小段就要下来把梯子往边上挪一点。
挪梯子的时候,梯子还经常被树枝挡住。真是高温条件下的力量训练加耐力训练,很快就大汗淋漓。苦干了两天,终于把维修工作干完了。房子看上去比原来好看很多,受到了领导的夸奖。我跟她说:你以为我每天锻炼都是在伤自己的身体?什么叫养兵千日,用兵一时?知道红岩里的华子良为什么天天跑步吧?
说实话架长梯子刷漆这活儿还真挺累。两天下来,那感觉至少跟打个半铁差不多。想想波大每天架长梯子做消防训练也挺不容易的,他的梯子肯定比我的还重。
这些天干活太猛了,靴子都蹬破了,哈哈。
应该不是。最近连续两双鞋都掉底儿了,我想可能是鞋放在车库里,夏天温度太高了,脱胶了。
天天在前后院泡着,每晚倒头就睡。

基本上就是给家里变相创收哇。而且,请人做这些的话,花钱是一回事情,肯定没有自己家人做得上心、细致啊。
I bet the ladders they gave out to firemen is top quality. I sure hope they are.

最近几年发现开始恐高了,上房顶腿都要哆嗦了。所以现在登高作业格外小心。
我这次架高梯刷漆可以算力量训练。虽然50不算重,但是二十多尺的长度使力臂很长,所以很费劲。这样来回折腾大半天,还是很有锻炼的作用。
关键是不用预约,随叫随到。来之能战,战之能胜,嘿嘿。
至少我们是一伙的!
东西修好了,自己左看右看,说不尽的成就感。心里得到满足。
我的梯子重是要买个结实不晃的,但又不想买太贵的。是铝的。我想消防队应该是用更好材料,碳钢,钛合金什么的,又轻又结实。
希望度假的地方也可以健身,不然十来天回来,武功废掉一大半。
那天还好只有几个蚊子来骚扰一下。等我刷完漆过了一个礼拜以后,我们家院子里来了两只鸟。估计在树上做窝,有小鸟了。我一到院子里站一会儿,就会有一只鸟俯冲下来攻击我。要是这两只鸟早来一周,我上去刷漆的时候,可能要被它们拼命攻击了。
现在还没想出办法对付这两只鸟。
